Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Charge Nurse and Lead Medical Assistant, the Medical Assistant provides essential patient care services within a correctional health center setting. The Medical Assistant works collaboratively with healthcare providers and other members of the care team to support the delivery of safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.

The Medical Assistant is responsible for performing patient intake activities, obtaining medical histories, measuring vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, conducting point-of-care testing, assisting with referrals and follow-up care, and supporting overall health center operations while maintaining compliance with Unity Health Care policies, procedures, and applicable healthcare standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintains patient confidentiality and protects Electronic Health Record (EHR) information in accordance with organizational policies and regulations.
• Prepares patients and EHR documentation for provider visits, communicates patient concerns or changes in condition to providers, and assists during examinations as needed.
• Accurately obtains and documents vital signs, height, weight, chief complaints, and medical and social history information for adult and pediatric patients.
• Performs routine patient intake procedures and clinical testing, including standing orders, urine testing, phlebotomy, finger/heel sticks, injections/immunizations, and EKGs.
• Maintains cleanliness and organization of clinical areas, including restocking supplies and maintaining designated resource areas.
• Supports pre-visit planning activities for providers and Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) teams.
• Provides basic health education to patients related to chronic disease management and preventive care.
• Assists with referrals, scheduling appointments, obtaining authorizations when needed, and following up on missed appointments.
• Supports effective patient discharge processes and ensures appropriate communication of follow-up instructions.
• Maintains required logs and completes routine safety checks, including refrigerator temperatures, eyewash stations, oxygen checks, autoclave maintenance, and required testing.
• Maintains medical instruments, including cleaning, preparation, and sterilization procedures as required.
• Demonstrates excellent customer service when interacting with patients, providers, staff, and external partners.
• Follows Universal Precautions, OSHA standards, and Unity Health Care policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program with a diploma.
• Certification as a Clinical Medical Assistant
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and AED CPR certification.
• Effective professional communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to support and promote Unity Health Care’s mission through daily work activities.
