Sub-System Lead Engineer - Electric Power Components

Full-time

General Motors

Job DescriptionOur Mission:At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scaleThe Sub-System Lead Engineer (SSLE) for Electric Power Components will lead the technical definition, integration, and validation of low-voltage electric power subsystems and their vehicle interfaces. The scope includes lead-acid batteries, intelligent battery sensors, DC/AC inverters, generators, and related power, communication, diagnostic, and control interfaces across current and future vehicle programs. This role is accountable for translating vehicle and system needs into clear, testable subsystem requirements; maintaining alignment across hardware, software, controls, diagnostics, calibration, safety, validation, manufacturing, service, and suppliers; and driving timely resolution of complex technical issues. The SSLE will operate with a high level of independent judgment, influence technical direction across organizational boundaries, and lead work through collaboration rather than direct people management. The Role As a senior technical individual contributor, you will own the requirements and technical integration strategy for an assigned Electric Power subsystem or group of interfaces. You will connect customer and vehicle-level needs to component-level implementation and verification, ensuring that the resulting solution is robust, traceable, manufacturable, serviceable, and ready for program milestones. You will work closely with Design Release Engineers, Functional System Architects, system and safety engineers, controls and software teams, technical specialists, validation teams, manufacturing, purchasing, service, and suppliers. You will also provide technical leadership to cross-functional teams and guide the work of other engineers as needed. What You’ll Do Lead the definition and maintenance of subsystem requirements for lead-acid batteries, intelligent battery sensors, DC/AC inverters, generators, and related Electric Power interfaces. Develop, review, and maintain Sub-System Technical Specifications and, where applicable, Behavioral Technical Specifications, interface requirements, diagnostic requirements, and acceptance criteria. Decompose system and vehicle requirements into clear, complete, consistent, feasible, and verifiable subsystem requirements with full traceability. Maintain requirements and interface content in the approved requirements-management environment, including DOORS/DNG or successor tools, and ensure changes are controlled and communicated. Develop or contribute to Model-Based Systems Engineering artifacts, such as context, block definition, use-case, activity, and internal block diagrams, to clarify subsystem behavior and interfaces. Lead cross-functional requirement and behavior discussions, including triad reviews and Given/When/Then scenario development where applicable. Partner with Design Release Engineers and suppliers to ensure component designs, packaging, electrical interfaces, communication behavior, diagnostics, and performance meet subsystem intent. Collaborate with controls, software, diagnostics, calibration, and systems teams to review implementation, resolve integration gaps, and ensure hardware and software operate as an integrated solution. Define and maintain the validation intent for the subsystem, including testable scenarios, acceptance criteria, test coverage, and support for the Testable Functionality Roll-Out Plan. Coordinate with bench, vehicle, simulation, and virtual-validation teams to evaluate designs, investigate anomalies, and close issues using quantitative and qualitative evidence. Support development and maintenance of subsystem and solution FMEAs, including linkage to safety, manufacturing, service, and software-related failure modes. Support safety, regulatory, OBD, cybersecurity, and other compliance-related requirements as applicable to the assigned subsystem. Lead root-cause analysis for subsystem issues, drive corrective actions with the responsible teams and suppliers, and translate approved resolutions into updated requirements or interface definitions. Participate in design reviews, technical reviews, program milestone assessments, issue reviews, Agile ceremonies, iteration planning, and program increment activities as applicable. Manage technical work through the appropriate backlog and issue-tracking tools, including Jira, and maintain clear status, decisions, risks, and dependencies. Drive alignment across multiple vehicle programs and stakeholders when Electric Power components or interfaces are reused, variantized, or changed. Identify technical risks early, establish recovery actions, and communicate concise recommendations to engineering and program leadership. Mentor and coach engineers in requirements quality, systems thinking, interface management, validation intent, and disciplined issue resolution. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, systems engineering, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent relevant experience. At least five plus years of experience in automotive engineering, systems engineering, component development, electrical architecture, or a closely related technical field. Experience developing, reviewing, or managing requirements for automotive systems, subsystems, components, or interfaces.Knowledge of automotive communication and diagnostic technologies, such as CAN, LIN, GMLAN, serial data, U-services, RIDs, DIDs, or OBD. Experience with DFMEA, subsystem or solution FMEA, supplier DFMEA, DRBFM, design reviews, and validation Experience with low-voltage vehicle electrical systems, including 12V and/or 48V architectures, power distribution, battery systems, sensing, conversion, generation, or related interfaces. Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical issues from problem definition through root cause, corrective action, validation, and closure. Experience working across hardware, software, controls, validation, manufacturing, service, and supplier organizations. Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to engineers, suppliers, program teams, and leadership. Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound engineering judgment, manage competing priorities, and influence outcomes without direct authority. Preferred Qualifications Experience with lead-acid batteries, intelligent battery sensors, DC/AC inverters, generators, or vehicle power-management systems. Experience with requirements-management and traceability tools such as DOORS/DNG, Jira, or comparable platforms. Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering, SysML, Rhapsody, behavioral requirements, or Given/When/Then methods. Experience with virtual validation, simulation, co-simulation, electrical analysis, or data-driven troubleshooting. Familiarity with functional safety, regulatory compliance, cybersecurity, manufacturing, service, and design-for-quality considerations. Experience leading suppliers and coordinating technical deliverables across multiple vehicle programs. Success in This Role Success will be demonstrated by requirements and interfaces that are complete, traceable, testable, and aligned across the vehicle architecture; timely closure of technical and validation issues; disciplined change management; effective supplier and cross-functional execution; and robust Electric Power subsystem integration through development, release, launch, and production support.#LI-SW1SPONSORSHIP: GM DOES NOT PROVIDE IMMIGRATION-RELATED SPONSORSHIP FOR THIS ROLE.
