Project Engineer IV

Project Engineer IV is a position within the Transmission Department to lead the design of complex transmission projects. Candidates are expected to perform a variety of complex tasks, delegating and reviewing routine tasks of Project Engineers as well as Engineering Technicians. Responsibilities include providing technical oversight, subject matter expertise, and overall project leadership. Candidates should be capable of operating with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities include:

• Leading the transmission design of projects from concept through final design, ensuring project requirements defined by project managers are met, including EMF studies, conductor sizing, induction, impedance, losses, and voltage drop analyses.
• Developing transmission equipment deliverables, including packaged equipment specifications, data sheets, RFQs, technical bid evaluations, and purchase recommendations.
• Performing and leading routing studies, construction cost estimating, and conceptual line designs.
• Calculating and determining required electrical clearances in accordance with NESC and other applicable codes; interpreting and applying relevant NERC, FERC, and regional standards and clearly communicating requirements to project teams.
• Supporting and contributing to a company-wide safety culture by following established safety standards, policies, and best practices, helping to ensure a safe environment for employees, clients, and the public.
• Reviewing vendor drawings for transmission equipment and coordinating technical data exchanges with suppliers, clients, designers, detailers, and other engineering disciplines.
• Contributing to project planning activities, including schedule development, scope definition, budgeting, staffing, and construction planning; managing and tracking design-related change orders.
• Utilizing advanced knowledge of transmission engineering principles, practices, codes, and industry standards to support project execution.
• Applying professional judgment and experience to complex or unique project challenges, developing practical and non-standard design solutions when required.
• Performing quality reviews of production drawings and project data to ensure accuracy and compliance, using multiple CAD and design software platforms.
• Supporting construction administration through technical reviews, coordination with field staff, resolution of installation issues, field inspections, calculations, and system testing.
• Leading or supporting field inspections, installation verification, measurements, and calculations for public and private sector clients.
• Preparing and delivering technical reports and presentations for clients and, when appropriate, industry publications or forums.
• Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with clients, customers, and contractors, ensuring project expectations and satisfaction objectives are achieved.
• Developing detailed cost proposals, qualification packages, project budgets, and engineering cost estimates; monitoring and reporting on project financial performance.
• Providing technical leadership within the transmission engineering practice, offering guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers.
• Ensuring adherence to established QA/QC processes throughout project execution.
• Maintaining effective coordination and communication with other engineering disciplines.
• Upholding company and site-specific safety requirements and promoting safe engineering and field practices.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Expert knowledge of permitting, easement, and right-of-way requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

• B.S. degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering required.
• 8+ years of applicable experience required.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• Proficiency in ETAP and CYME (experience in thermal and impedance analysis of systems is a plus).
• Proficiency in PLS-CADD, MFAD, LPILE, Civil-3D, and Microsoft 365 preferred.
• Excellent project management skills and ability to meet deliverables on time and on budget. Experience with Microsoft Project software is preferred.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, and management of personnel.
• Mastery of standard engineering techniques and procedures related to transmission.
• Proficient in understanding of distribution and substation functions.
• Ability to travel.
