The City of Ontario's Parks and Maintenance Department has an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in serving the community by playing a key role on the team. The Irrigation Maintenance Technician is responsible for inspecting, supervising and performing a variety of tasks in the repairs and maintenance of irrigation systems. NOTE: This position is subject to mandatory standby duty assignment and emergency call back. Standby duty assignments are rotated bi-annually. The following procedures will apply:

• Separate Promotional and Open (external) Eligibility Lists will be established.
• The hiring department will consider candidates on the Promotional Eligibility List prior to considering candidates on the Open Eligibility List.
• The Open Eligibility List will consist of external applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
• The Promotional Eligibility List will be comprised of current City employees (full or part-time) who meet the minimum qualifications and successfully complete any required selection processes.
• The City of Ontario reserves the right, if necessary, to accept only the first one hundred (100) applications from applicants that meet the qualification guidelines below.
• Completed applications will be reviewed and only qualified applicants whose qualifications best meet or exceed the requirements of the position and needs of the City will be invited to participate further in the selection process.

Parks and Maintenance Department The Parks and Maintenance Department is committed to creating and strengthening community value by enhancing the quality of life in the City of Ontario through our professional services, maintaining and preserving parkland, public facilities, and City infrastructure. This includes the maintenance service programs and operations to the City park system, public grounds, roadway maintenance, storm drains, street sweeping, sidewalks and public right-of-way, tree trimming, graffiti abatement, traffic signs, street painting and striping, debris removal, and contract maintenance services.

Examples of Essential Functions

The functions typically performed by the Irrigation Maintenance Technician include the following:

• Leads a work crew, conducts job specific training, coordinates work assignments with crew, reviews finished work and oversees worksite safety.
• Monitors and maintains City owned irrigated landscape.
• Operates tractors, water trucks, skip loaders, trenchers, and other light and medium duty equipment.
• Maintains irrigation schedules on Calsense controllers and standalone controllers.
• Tests, replaces and repairs irrigation backflow equipment.
• Repairs and or replaces damaged drinking fountain, irrigation main lines, heads, valves, master valves and related wiring.
• Record and prepares reports related to areas of assignment.
• May fill in during the absence of supervisor.
• Assists and leads in the completion of special projects as required.

Qualification Guidelines

Education High School diploma or recognized equivalent. Experience Four years of related work experience in park maintenance and other public service activities. Certifications Possession of an American Water Works Association (AWWA) Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certification at time of appointment or must obtain within six (6) months of appointment. Licenses Must possess a valid Class C California driver's license and an acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment. As a condition of continued employment in this position, you must obtain a valid Class A CA driver's license prior to completion of probationary period (6 months). Special Requirement Will be required to return to work during non-business hours in an emergency situation to perform work on a scheduled stand-by assignment. Incumbents in this classification are subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) preemployment, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing.
