Job Description The Security Officer provides a safe environment for patients, visitors, employees, and volunteers, typically in an office or ambulatory clinic setting. This position is responsible for monitoring visitor or patient activity, monitoring the premises in and around the facility, enforcing policy, providing assistance and direction, responding to emergencies, and providing protection for employees, visitors, and Intermountain property. In this role, you’ll support day‑to‑day hospital operations through routine patrols, de‑escalation of situations, access control, and responding to incidents—all while providing a visible and professional security presence. Job Details Position Type: PRN / Per Diem Starting Pay: $19.95/hr (based on related experience) Shift Differentials: Available for evenings, nights, and weekends Schedule/Shifts: Day, evening, and night shifts available Availability: Must be open to weekends and holidays Location: Primary Children’s Hospital Essential Functions Operates and monitors security technology systems, including surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems. Ensures proper functioning and maintenance of security equipment. De‑escalation: Uses verbal and non‑verbal strategies to calm individuals and resolve conflicts peacefully, minimizing the need for physical force. Dealing with Violent Patients: Intervenes to protect the safety of everyone involved when patients act aggressively or violently, including using physical restraints when necessary. Regulatory Compliance: Ensures compliance with regulations such as HIPAA when reporting crimes or incidents, disclosing only the minimum necessary information to law enforcement. Bomb Threat/Suspicious Package Responses: Trained to respond to bomb threats and suspicious packages, following protocols to ensure the safety of the facility. Participation in Drills: Engages in exercises like infant abduction and active shooter scenarios to prepare staff for real‑life situations. Conducting Searches: Performs respectful and safe searches of patients and searching for narcotics, ensuring compliance with legal requirements. Safety Inspections: Conducts inspections of walking surfaces, fire extinguishers, and overall facility safety to mitigate risks. Parking Enforcement: Enforces parking regulations to ensure safety and accessibility, focusing on enhancing the patient experience. Investigations: Collaborates with HR and law enforcement to conduct investigations, following protocols for disclosing patient information, and ensuring facility safety. Skills Law Enforcement Parking Public Safety Lockout Tagout Fire Drills Key Control Exterior Design Patient Transportation Communication Situational Awareness Decision Making Minimum Qualifications Current Driver’s License (if applicable for the role). Current BLS certification for healthcare providers or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire. At least 21 years of age. Preferred Qualifications One‑year previous law enforcement, corrections, public safety, military police or security experience. Physical Requirements Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and assess customer needs. Frequent interactions with customers requiring communication and rapid understanding of spoken information, alarms, and issues. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. Expected to lift, pull, and push equipment; operate on hands and knees and bend to set up, troubleshoot, lift, and carry supplies and equipment, including heavy items. For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing, and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
