Food Service Assistant
The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.
With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.
The food service assistant production staff member is responsible for learning all duties in the assigned areas, which include production, preparation, storage of food and supplies, accountability, and safety/sanitation procedures. Must assist with production schedules and is responsible for the preparation of the highest quality and attractive food in necessary amounts. Works 4 hours or more daily, may complete cashier duties, may be assigned to any work area/department, Includes elementary school single preparation worker, may include secondary school single preparation worker.
Essential functions include attending and completing required job related training classes and workshops, practicing appropriate HACCP procedures, following verbal and/or written instructions, maintaining the highest quality of production, using only district approved standardized recipes, maintaining required records and forms, demonstrating the ability to communicate positively, assisting other food service workers, following procedures in personnel matters, performing any food service related tasks as assigned, following district/department policies and procedures, and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, good communication and customer service skills, good organizational, record keeping and telephone skills, ability to lift 35# alone and 50# and above with assistance, must be able to stand continuously throughout assigned shift, job requires bending, stooping, kneeling, and pushing and pulling, health permits full participation in all food service related tasks and meets requirements of Board Of Education, must complete a minimum of 15 hours of training during the first year of employment and 10 hours per year thereafter, and willingness to consider joining state and national professional affiliations.
Communication/organization includes maintaining communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students, utilizing existing technology effectively in the performance of duties, and performing other related work as required.
Reasoning ability includes performing basic math, understanding written procedures, writing routine documents, and speaking clearly. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures, quantifying food preparation and handling, and sanitation practices.
Language skills include the ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively to co-workers, students and staff and visitors.
Physical demands include standing for long periods of time, lifting and/or moving up to 35 pounds, lifting items with assistance of 50 pounds such as cases of cans and 50 lbs. bags of sugar or flour, or moving/rearranging appliances, and specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
Work environment includes 20% sitting, 20% walking, and 60% standing, temperature extremes, exposure to risk of injury and/or illness, and a loud noise level.
Other skills and abilities include communicating with diverse groups, setting priorities, working as part of a team, working with interruptions, and working with detailed information/data. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.
Terms of employment: 186 days. Salary: Level 1. FLSA status: hourly, non-exempt. Report to: Nutritional Service Director, Coordinator of Cafeteria Operations, Manager Level I & II and his/her representative.
