JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Special Education Teacher
SALARY LEVEL: Certified Pay Scale per Current Contract
REPORTS TO: Building Principals
WORK SCHEDULE: 7:55 AM - 3:30 PM 186 Days/School Year
CLASSIFICATION: Certified
SUMMARY: The Special Education Teacher is responsible for designing and implementing individualized
education programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's unique needs. This involves adapting curriculum and
teaching methods to foster academic and personal growth. The teacher will work closely with a team of
educators, parents, and specialists to create a nurturing and effective learning environment. They are also tasked
with monitoring student progress, managing classroom behavior, and ensuring compliance with educational
regulations.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Building Principal and Special Education Coordinator
PAYMENT RATE: According to Certified Salary Schedule
BENEFITS: According to the Master Agreement
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develop and Implement IEPs: Design and execute individualized education programs for each student
based on their specific needs, strengths, and goals. Ensure that all IEPs comply with federal, state, and
local regulations.
2. Adapt Instructional Methods: Modify teaching methods and curriculum to accommodate different
learning styles and abilities. Utilize a variety of instructional techniques to enhance student engagement
and understanding.
3. Collaborate with Stakeholders: Work closely with parents, general education teachers, school
counselors, and other support staff to develop and implement effective strategies for student success.
Actively participate in IEP meetings and communicate progress with all stakeholders.
4. Maintain Compliance: Keep up-to-date with special education laws and regulations to ensure all
educational practices are compliant. Prepare and maintain accurate records of students' progress and
behavior.
5. Support Emotional and Social Development: Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment
that promotes social interaction, self-confidence, and emotional well-being.
6. Professional Development: Engage in continuous professional development to stay informed about the
latest trends, research, and best practices in special education.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Instructional Delivery: Plan and deliver effective lessons that align with IEP goals and objectives. Use
diverse teaching methods to meet the varying needs of students with disabilities.
2. Behavior Management: Develop and implement positive behavior support plans to address and
manage challenging behaviors. Use proactive strategies to create a safe and conducive learning
environment.
3. Assessment and Monitoring: Regularly assess and monitor student progress through formal and
informal assessments. Adjust instructional strategies and interventions based on assessment data.
4. Communication: Maintain open and effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
Provide regular updates on student progress and collaborate on strategies to support student learning.
5. Documentation: Accurately document student performance, IEP updates, and any incidents or
modifications. Ensure all reports and records are completed in a timely and organized manner.

6. Technology Integration: Utilize educational technology and assistive devices to enhance learning
opportunities for students with disabilities.
7. Crisis Intervention: Respond effectively to emergencies or situations requiring immediate intervention
to ensure student safety and well-being.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
1. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education or a related field (or ability to obtain).
2. Valid state certification in Special Education (or ability to obtain).
3. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, proficiency in developing and implementing IEPs, and
the ability to adapt to various learning styles and needs.
Physical Ability: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk,
sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel,
crouch or crawl, talk, see and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
