Deputy Coroner Investigator I/II

Position Overview Deputy Coroner Investigator I and II are entry‑level positions within the Sheriff‑Coroner’s Office of Shasta County. The role involves investigating sudden, violent, or unexpected deaths, maintaining custody of deceased persons, protecting property, and providing testimony in court. Responsibilities Investigate and report on deaths within the Sheriff‑Coroner jurisdiction. Take custody of the deceased when required and secure the property of the deceased. Identify the deceased through search efforts, fingerprints, and documentation of distinguishing physical characteristics. Coordinate autopsies with forensic pathologists and arrange testing of toxicology samples. Collect evidence, perform scene photography, and preserve the property of the deceased. Interview witnesses and cooperate with law‑enforcement, funeral, and medical communities. Provide testimony in court or during legal depositions. Assist with indigent burial or cremation benefit applications and coordination with funeral chapels. Maintain inventory of property belonging to the County and perform related duties as assigned. Work regular assigned hours and provide standby coverage after normal hours when assigned. Lift, move, and transport deceased persons and associated equipment, often up to 100 pounds. Qualifications Principles and techniques of death and criminal investigation, including interviewing methods and techniques. Knowledge of evidence preservation, medical and scientific terminology, basic toxicology, physiology, and anatomy related to death investigations. Ability to collect and evaluate evidence, interview witnesses, analyze situations, and compose accurate reports. Physical capability to lift and move deceased persons, walk over uneven terrain, and handle infectious materials. Compassionate work with the public and maintain cooperative relationships with co‑workers, allied agencies, and the public. Minimum Qualifications Deputy Coroner Investigator I: Two (2) years of experience in a medical, nursing, medical examiner, coroner, mortuary, law‑enforcement, or investigative field. Deputy Coroner Investigator II: Three (3) years of experience in a medical, nursing, medical examiner, coroner, mortuary, law‑enforcement, or investigative field. Special Requirements Possession of a valid California driver’s license. Successful completion of the PC 832 Arrest and Firearms Course within one (1) year of appointment. Successful completion of the 80‑hour POST Death Investigations Course within one (1) year of appointment. Yes/No Physical Demands and Work Environment The employee must lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, walk and carry deceased persons on rough terrain, and perform duties in various weather conditions. The work environment includes exposure to moving mechanical parts, high or precarious places, wet or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
