Evening Custodian

Custodial Maintenance WorkerUnder the direct supervision of the principal, performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds; maintains equipment in functional condition; and provides cleaning and custodial assistance to students, teachers, visitors and others as necessary. Performs related duties and general maintenance work as required. Essential functions include checking and securing buildings at the beginning and end of shifts to ensure safety and cleanliness, cleaning rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas of the building according to school district standards, sweeping, mopping, buffing, stripping, and waxing floors, cleaning rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and blinds, washing walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills, removing graffiti, cleaning glass areas, replacing light bulbs, setting up and breaking down chairs, tables, and equipment in meeting rooms and functional rooms, clearing snow from entrances and walks, spreading sand and ice melting chemicals, performing grounds-keeping duties, clearing debris and maintaining grounds, receiving deliveries and assisting in unloading trucks and storing supplies, delivering supplies and materials to classrooms, bathrooms, and other areas of the building, emptying wastebaskets, picking up and removing trash, and assisting in recycling program. Additional duties include performing general cleaning and repair work, particularly during school vacations, assisting parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programs, and performing other related tasks as assigned by supervisor. Equipment uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mower and hand tools. Safety requirements include following all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties, wearing appropriate safety gear, including masks, complying with school district's chemical hygiene program and following MSDS sheets. Travel requirements may include occasional travel between schools, or between schools and central office. Knowledge, skills and abilities include following oral or written work orders from supervisor, reading, writing and speaking English fluently, describing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems as needed, establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing all units of measure, working in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow, working above ground from ladders and automatic lifts, and performing work according to standard procedures and schedule set forth by supervisor(s). Physical and mental demands, work hazards include working in standard office and school building environments, working outdoors in inclement weather conditions, and exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.
