PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
In performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees of Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina are expected to conform to the following:

• Interact in an honest, trustworthy, and respectful manner with employees, Tribal members, visitors, and vendors.

• Maintain a current insurable driver’s license.

POSITION PURPOSE
The Custodian will maintain Tribal housekeeping services in the facilities as assigned.  Their primary role is to keep the buildings clean and safe.  The custodian will be working directly with cleaning soaps, chemicals and other supplies and equipment.     

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Maintain the general cleaning of tribal buildings, both internal and external.  
2. Clean and sanitize restrooms on a daily basis. Refill soap and towel dispensers as needed.
3. Clean, dust and wipe furniture, walls, and light fixtures daily.  Use of ladders when required in work assignments. 
4. Sweep, mop and vacuum daily. Empty waste basket and trash container daily.   
5. Lock and unlock assigned buildings:  secure buildings when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights. 
6. Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies.  Use as directed. 
7. Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools as needed for cleaning purposes. 
8. Wash accessible interior and exterior windows.  Clean blinds. Launder cleaning rags and dust mops. Ensure proper care with mops and buckets for extended life use. 
9. Have essential physical and mental capabilities in the following:  interpersonal skills, attention to details, follow directions, comprehension, calculating, reading, writing, speaking, evaluating, organizing and innovation.  
10. Handle emergencies, as needed. 
11. Perform other duties as assigned. 

MINIMUM MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

• Three to twelve months of experience. 

Education:

• No requirement for a degree, but a high school diploma is preferable. 

Mandatory Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Qualifications:

• Must be able to follow directions with limited supervision.  
• Excellent communication skills are required.   
• Person must be willing to perform possible travel within the service area.  
• A valid NC Driver’s License is required. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative to those an employee encounters while performing the primary functions of this job. Normal office conditions exist, and the noise level in the work environment can vary from low to moderate. Limited overnight travel may be required from time to time.

Physical demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to frequently stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, talk, hear and perform repetitive motions. There may be prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, reading, as well as driving or riding in transport vehicles. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision. Talking and hearing are essential to communicate with clients, vendors, and staff.

Mental demands:
There are a number of deadlines associated with this position. The employee must be able to handle frequent interruptions and must also multi-task and interact with a wider variety of people on various and, at times, complicated issues.

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina has implemented an Indian Preference in Employment Policy. Pursuant to this Policy, applicants who possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required by this position, and who are members of the Lumbee Tribe will be given primary preference for hiring and employment after providing proof of tribal membership. Indian preference is integrated into the interview and scoring process for candidates for job positions.

Background Investigation:
This position is subject to a criminal history background check, and a Motor Vehicle check. Candidates must successfully pass all required background checks in order to qualify for this position.

Drug Screening:
All applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening prior to beginning employment and will be subject to random drug testing.
