Primary Objective:  In broad terms, briefly state the major purpose of primary objective of this position.

Performs preventive maintenance, repairs, overhauls and adjustments to weaving machinery (looms) to minimize machine downtime and maintain maximum quality and production levels.  Will perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Major Function and Scope: Using brief narrative statements, describe each major function of responsibility explaining the scope of the function as appropriate.

  1. Patrols assigned set of looms and checks for quality defects and machine malfunctions. Makes adjustments, repairs and overhauls to machinery as needed to minimize machine down time and maximize safety, quality and production.
  2. Perform all “check lists” type duties on style changes, new warps and maintenance looms.  Supervisor may assign assistance as deemed necessary.
  3. Performs preventive maintenance procedures on looms.  Records all action on the proper forms, takes corrective action or makes recommendations for repair.
  4. Inspects machine malfunction and woven cloth to locate problems, determine work to be done, repair, clean, adjust, lubricate, etc. as required to correct malfunction.
  5. Repairs or replaces defective parts, adjusts tension and timing of parts using hand tools.
  6. Levels and aligns parts to prevent excessive wear.
  7. Assists the warp changer personnel on cleaning and start-up of looms at warp out.
  8. Will perform routine cleaning duties on assigned set of machines.
  9. Assists weaver as needed in repairing stops and creeling fill yarn.
  10. Measures roll widths as needed or directed.
  11. Follow all written procedures when performing lockout/tagout.
  12. Follow Blow Off Lay-Out schedule. Blow off looms, box shuttles and do daily loom oiling within the first 2 hours of the shift.  The two-day shifts will blow off and oil each other’s looms and the two night shifts will blow off and oil each other’s looms.  Must wipe off the Plexiglas filling shield (not just blow off shield).
  13. Mop under looms.
  14. Place and replace oil pads as needed.
  15. May be required weave, as needed and directed by the supervisor.
  16. Loom Fixers are responsible for :
    1. Treadle levers.
    2. FA conveyor track sprocket bearing.
    3. Friction drive.
    4. Switch out FA housing.
    5. Clutch and brake band.
    6. Maintaining ALL loom settings.
    7. Oil leaks.
    8. Free wheeling device.
    9. All oil seals, except main shaft and slay drive seal.
    10. Replace all O rings.
    11. Reed changes.
    12. Pick gear changes.
    13. Rebuild take-up shaft at pick gears.
    14. Drive shaft above tappet.
    15. Change out take up roll (first cloth roll, top inspection roll and three cloth take up rolls)
    16. Replace carrier roll bearing
    17. Replace slay drive(s)
    18. Don’t adjust bronco box or control box without informing supervisor.

    16. Wire roller removal / press roll (may be performed by one loom fixer and one breakdown employee/ one 5-day weaving maintenance employee).  See wire roller removal procedure.
  1. General Duties
    1. Participate in Safety programs and Neighborhood Watch.
    2. Works safely and orderly.
    3. Notify supervision of any hazardous or unsafe conditions.
    4. Maintains clean and orderly work area.
      1. Keep grease and yarn off FA and SU side of loom.  Keep yarn and grease off catwalk and floor.  All yarn waste must go inside the string waste can at loom.
  1. Perform all necessary miscellaneous work pertaining to the above job duties.
  2. Any other duties assigned by management.

Type of Experience and Knowledge:

Knowledge, Experience, Competencies and Supervision: Describe the education, knowledge required, years of experience, specific skills and abilities required to do the job on a fully competent basis.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE PREREQUISITES:

Mandatory – Must be able to read and write in manner indicated on application.  New employees may be required to take and pass a mechanical aptitude test.

Preferred – Prior weaver experience. Warp Changer and Beamer Operator experience also acceptable. Prior work experience demonstrates good mechanical aptitude.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to work assigned schedule.  Must be self-motivated.  Must have the ability to troubleshoot mechanical systems and computerized equipment.  Ability to legibly fill out forms/check sheets. Ability to perform logical and mathematical calculations.  Knowledge of loom mechanics, weaving procedures, quality assurance standards and product specifications.  Ability to learn job specific computer skills.  All Loom Fixer trainees are required to pass weekly mechanical and written evaluations to evaluate skills retention and application. Employees not able to demonstrate the ability to retain and apply skills learned during training may be reassigned to another available position, if one exists.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Reports to Shift Supervisor or Weaving Department Manager and works with minimum amount of supervision.

DIRECTION EXERCISED:

Independently determines job priorities. Limited to personal activities required to perform job duties.

Competencies:  Describe the specific skills required for this position in terms of technical, managerial, interpersonal skills and unique abilities.

  • Must maintain high standards for work quality and safety.
  • Must be able to determine and execute work priorities to maximize production and minimize machine down time.
  • Ability to serve as the technical expert within the scope of the position.
  • Ability to analyze, research, interpret and apply technical solutions for unique and complex machine malfunctions.

  • Must be able to communicate clearly and efficiently, which includes the ability read, interpret and follow directions from supervisors and managers.
  • Knowledge of lockout tag-out and other job-related safety requirements.
  • Ability to use manuals and diagrams to repair machines.
  • Ability to safely operate weaving machines, including starting and stopping the machine, threading yarn breaks, tying knots, and general maintenance.

STANDING / WALKING:

Ability to stand and walk continuously for eight (8) to twelve (12) hours during an eight (8) to twelve (12) hour shift.

Ability to move throughout weaving department continuously during an eight (8) to twelve (12) hour shift.

CLIMBING:

Ability to step on/off catwalk, as needed, during an eight (8) to twelve (12) hour shift.

MOVING (MATERIALS): (Lifting – carrying – pushing – pulling)

Pushing/pulling – Ability to push/pull tool box about assigned work area during an eight (8) to twelve (12) hour shift.  Ability to push/pull wrenches, ratchets and other hand tools repetitively throughout an eight (8) to twelve (12) hour shift.  Push not pull any (movable type) equipment.  Get help when needed.

Lifting/ carrying – Ability to lift/carry up to fifty (50) pounds without mechanical assistance.  Get help when needed.

HEARING / SPEAKING:

Must be able to communicate with co-workers and management as needed to perform job.

REACHING:

Vertical – Ability to reach up to full arm extension while performing job duties.

Horizontal – Ability to reach up to full arm extension while performing job duties.

VISUAL ACUITY:

Must have adequate normal, color vision and depth perception to perform job duties.  Ability to see small openings and parts in looms when disassembling and reassembling loom parts.  Must have the ability to repair yarn breaks, thread yarn through small openings, repair ends out and recognize quality defects. Ability to utilize both near and far vision while performing job duties.

BENDING / STOOPING:

Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, squat and assume awkward positions while performing job duties.

MENTAL ABILITIES:

Ability to make decisions regarding work priorities.  Ability to interpret style change sheets, quality assurance alerts and job requests. 

OTHER:

Fingering - Ability to demonstrate good tactile discrimination and functional sensation.

Medium motor manipulation – N/A

Fine motor coordination – Ability to manipulate small tools, tie small knots, manipulate buttons and knobs to start and stop looms.

Grip – Ability to utilize both a one handed and two-handed grip.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

Must wear hearing protection, safety glasses with permanent side shields and safety shoes always when in the warehouse and on production floor.  Must adhere to plant clothing and footwear policy.  Wear personal protective equipment as required by task at hand.  Use lockout/tagout where required.

MACHINE, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT:

Loom, powered industrial equipment, metric tool set, miscellaneous large and small hand tools, gauges/precision measuring instruments, grinders, drills, pry bar, oil can, tool box, scissors, reed hook, paint brush, utility knife, buffer, lockout lock, lockout tag, shuttle pusher and pen/pencil.

Hand tools are provided are provided to new Loom Fixers and the employee is responsible for maintaining their tools. Loom Fixer are responsible for replacing any lost tools. 

MATERIALS USED:

Machine parts, manuals, yarn, lubricants and cleaning fluids.
