This is a city full of energy, character and community that is on the move and seeking employees that are innovative and dedicated to serving a diverse and engaged public constituency.The school nurse works within the public school system; they assist with all other city programs within Everett as assigned by the Supervising Nurse. The nurse performs nursing services deemed necessary to contribute to the development of a healthy school community, minimize absence, and create an optimal environment of health and well being of the city's school children.Essential duties and responsibilities:Health assessment, medical treatment, and health counseling of studentsMedication administrationDevelopment, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of individualized medication administration care plans and individualized health care plansCollaboration with other health care providers and school personnel regarding the health of students.Provide emergency care to any individual in the area of injury or sudden illnessOrganization and implementation of all Massachusetts Department of Public Health mandated programs, including health screenings (vision, hearing, heights, weights, scoliosis) and immunization surveillance. Referral of students with health problems to appropriate resources.Maintain comprehensive and cumulative health records on all students using the computer database program Aspen X2, and report any discrepanciesCollects and maintains public health/school health activities as the Health Department requiresHealth promotion with school and communityPrevention and control of communicable disease with the schoolsReporting and investigation of communicable diseases according to the state regulationsAssist with staffing immunization clinicsEducate and assist school personnel in achieving and maintaining sanitary standards in school, including universal precautionsPlace timely orders for necessary medical and support supplies that are required in the school nurse office in each of the schools.Periodic recertification in CPR and First Aid, as well as maintaining proper continuing education credits for both the RN License and DOE certificationAssist with any other public health or school nurse-related duties assigned by the Supervising Nurse Manager and/or Director of Public HealthSupervision:The School Nurse reports to and receives supervision from the Supervising Nurse Manager and Director of Public Health. The school physician is available, through the supervising nurse through consultation only. The school nurses are to work alongside with the principal of the school building.Required qualifications:Current Registered Nurse LicenseCurrent CPR and First Aid Certification from a recognized providerMust be able to communicate effectively and tactfully with the staff, students and parents.Must know rules, regulations, and procedures, including safety procedures,Knowledge of department policies and procedures related to emergencyPhysical demands & working environment:The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands below.
