The Behavior Technician (BT) provides student assistance for students 3 to 22 years of age under the professional guidance and supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). The Behavior Technician (BT) provides direct behavioral support services to students with disabilities in a school setting. The BT implements behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and supports students in achieving their educational and developmental goals. Responsibilities may include one student or multiple students as assigned.

Education, Training, Skills, Experience, & Licensure Requirements:

• NH Paraeducator I or II certification or eligibility for certification
• Experience as a Behavior Technician (BT) required.
• Experience working with children with autism and other developmental disabilities preferred in a school setting.
• Strong understanding of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles.
• Ability to remain patient, flexible, and responsive in a school environment.
• Requires knowledge in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, behavior management, life skills, and educational professionalism to assist student instruction as specified in the state professional educator certification.
  
  
  The Special Education Paraprofessional supports the classroom environment by understanding the following:
• Child developmental stages from birth to age 22
• Various factors that might prohibit typical child development
• Different learning styles
• Family influence on childhood learning and development
• Variety of teaching strategies
• Necessity of sensitivity
• Range of classroom and behavior management strategies
• Variety of student learning assessments
• Various approaches to instruction, and
• Applicable laws, rules, regulations, and procedural safeguards.
• Requires demonstration of strong collaborative skills to work as part of a classroom team to support student/classroom learning and activities, problem solving skills to support student success, people skills in a service-oriented educational environment, verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills to balance demands of a multi-tasking position, and technology skills in the areas of office software, student educational software, student database software, student assistive learning software, and office equipment operation.
• Requires excellent attention to detail and follow through to meet student and classroom responsibilities and significant confidential responsibilities due to student and staff issues. Requires the ability to maintain a flexible schedule and the physical ability to safely assist students with disabilities.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Behavior Intervention & Support

• Implement individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) as designed by the BCBA.
• Use Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) techniques to reinforce positive behaviors and reduce challenging behaviors.
• Collect and record behavioral data to track student progress and intervention effectiveness.
• Utilize proactive strategies to support student engagement and self-regulation.

2. Student Support & Instruction

• Work directly with students in classroom settings, special education programs, or pull-out intervention sessions.
• Support students in developing social, communication, and self-management skills.
• Reinforce academic tasks and classroom routines as directed by the teacher and BCBA.
• Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support when necessary.

3. Collaboration & Communication

• Work closely with teachers, special education staff, counselors, and other school personnel to ensure consistent implementation of behavior strategies.
• Communicate regularly with the BCBA regarding student progress, challenges, and adjustments needed for behavior plans.
• Participate in team meetings, Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, and professional development sessions.

4. Documentation & Compliance

• Maintain accurate and timely data collection on student behaviors, interventions, and progress.
• Complete session notes, reports, and required documentation in accordance with school and ABA guidelines.
• Follow ethical and legal guidelines as outlined by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and school policies.

3. Professionalism

• Assist in maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment that includes following prescribed policy and procedures of the school and district.
• Function in a manner that serves as a role model to students in one's choices and actions, demonstrates the ability to use effective problem solving and appropriate social interactions, engages in flexible thinking, employs appropriate conflict management techniques, and analyzes one's own personal strengths and preferences.
• Communicate, follow instructions, and use problem solving and other skills that will enable the individual to work as an effective member of the IEP team.
• Seek help from appropriate sources as necessary.
• Support the instructional, behavior, and life choices made for students.
• Participate in ongoing professional development, self-evaluation, and application of constructive feedback.
• Demonstrate professional ethics by maintaining confidentiality of information regarding students, staff, and families and respecting legal rights and responsibilities of school staff and students.
• Attend IEP and other parent and/or staff meetings at the request of a teacher or administrator.
• Perform any additional duties, as requested by supervisor or other designated staff, which are consistent with the effective and orderly operation of the Newport School District and the goals and mission of the district.
