The Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer is responsible for the broad oversight and support of teams primarily impacting University of Utah Health (UHealth) through philanthropy, working in partnership with the Chief Philanthropy Officer, to maximize fundraising outcomes across a team of more than 25 advancement professionals positioned in support of the UHealth enterprise. This portion of the broader University Advancement operation includes generating philanthropic support for the academic, clinical, and research work specifically within the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine (SFESoM), the School of Dentistry, the Colleges of Health, Nursing, and Pharmacy, and the U of U’s Hospitals and Clinics. The DCPO will report directly to and collaborate with the Chief Philanthropy Officer for University Advancement. The DCPO will be responsible for the overall strategy and implementation of strategic development plans supporting the philanthropic priorities of UHealth and the broad enterprise. The DCPO will primarily support the development and achievement of UHealth fundraising priorities by providing direct oversight to a team of six development professionals including the Principal Director for Academic Health Advancement, the Principal Director for Clinical Health Advancement, the Director of Advancement for the SFESoM, the Director of Advancement for Health Sciences Research, the Associate Director of Advancement for the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational & Environmental Health, and jointly supports a University Advancement position supporting the Huntsman Mental Health Foundation & Institute. The DCPO participates in regular meetings of the University Advancement Leadership Team comprised of eight advancement leaders. Responsibilities Align fundraising strategies, prospects, and engagement plans to maximize philanthropic impact at the U. Work with prospect development and research teams to monitor and support the portfolio growth of major and principal gift fundraisers. Promote One U collaboration among colleges and areas, across campus, and in concert with University Advancement colleagues. Coordinate the work of the six team leads to whom the DCPO provides direct oversight. Advise on strategies for increasing the engagement and penetration of the prospect pool to enhance the major gift pipeline. Serve as a resource/liaison to select schools/colleges/programs and associated development staff to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of their fundraising. Actively manage and engage an appropriately sized portfolio of major and principal gift prospects and donors, leading by example. Assist in the development of training and mentorship programs supporting major gift fundraising within University Advancement. Assist with the enhancement of career paths within and across development job codes/grades, appropriately rewarding strong performance for goal attainment, while retaining and promoting excellent major gift fundraisers. Manage an internal operating budget and assist fundraisers in developing and managing their budgets. Contribute to the development, refinement and utilization of the campaign case statement, goals, and strategies for the comprehensive University-wide campaign. Guide the fundraising strategy and support of research-focused fundraising efforts to help recruit and retain faculty, provide early-stage research funding, and help translate discoveries into future therapies and products. Collaborate with Institutional Fundraising leadership to grow and maintain annual giving, leadership annual giving, grateful patient, and planned giving strategies. Support the strategy and engagement of various boards and councils across the enterprise as appropriate. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, clinical field, or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); nine years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, staff management, and effective communications skills required. Completion of hospital provided supervisory training within one year of employment may also be required. This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients. Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description. Preferences 15+ years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising leadership, preferably in higher education and/or academic medical center settings. Master’s degree and relevant certifications preferred ( CFRE ). Professional credibility, integrity, intellectual depth, maturity, wisdom, and collaborative skills to garner the trust and confidence of deans, directors, advancement staff, and donors. Experience managing and training frontline fundraisers, as demonstrated by successfully advancing their careers and providing the necessary support for success. Experience leading strategy and execution of campaigns of varied size and complexity, including capital construction, scholarship, and comprehensive campaign models. Track-record of successfully securing principal-level gifts and managing complex donor relationships. Experience working in fundraising CRM tools (Salesforce) and business intelligence tools (Tableau) for performance tracking, coaching and support and data-driven decision making. Understanding of trends driving changes in philanthropic giving and experience in adapting fundraising strategies. Working knowledge of planned giving, financial and/or estate planning concepts is preferred. Exceptional communication and presentation skills, frequently speaking to public groups and serving as a leadership ambassador. Experience and understanding of academic healthcare, health research, healthcare delivery.
