Deputy Sheriff Cadet – Detentions/Court Services Are you seeking an exciting and challenging career in law enforcement? The County of San Diego has immediate vacancies for Deputy Sheriff Cadets in Detentions/Court Services. Future Salary Increases June 2027 – 5.33% increase to base pay (3% Across-the-Board + 2.33% Market Adjustment). Base Pay & Incentives The base pay for a Deputy Sheriff in Detentions / Court Services is $39.75 upon graduation. Education premium – 5%. Training and Responsibilities Cadets attend a comprehensive 16‑week training academy, including classroom study and examinations in Jail Procedures, Classification of Incarcerated Persons, Progressive Physical Training, Defensive Tactics, Security Maintenance, Supervision of Inmates, Assaultive Behavior, Emergency Procedures, Firearms Training, Courtroom Procedures, Criminal and Civil Proceedings, and related subjects. Minimum Requirements Education, training, and/or experience that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Must be 18 years of age at time of application. Obtain a U.S. high school diploma or G.E.D.; or a degree from a two‑year or four‑year accredited U.S. college or university. Applicants must attach a copy of their conferred transcript or diploma to their application. Eligibility Standards Must meet employment guidelines established by the Commission for Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and related statutes. Candidates must be able to carry, possess, receive, and own a firearm during employment. Background and Medical Screening As part of the pre‑employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a medical screening in accordance with the POST Medical Screening Manual prior to beginning County employment. Written Examination Eligible candidates will be invited to take a written examination, including the Sheriff's Aptitude Assessment and Basic Readiness Exam (SAABRE). The exam will assess English comprehension and related skills. Applicants who have recently taken the California POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLET‑B) must wait at least thirty (30) days before taking the SAABRE. Selection Process Successful candidates will complete a comprehensive background investigation, computer voice stress analysis exam, employment interview, psychological examination, physical abilities test, physical assessment, and full medical exam including drug screening.
