Registered Nurse Labor and Delivery

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery provides specialized nursing care to laboring and postpartum patients, managing high-risk pregnancies and maternal emergencies. This role involves active management of labor, including induction and augmentation, and requires collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The nurse must demonstrate expertise in acute care for conditions such as pre-eclampsia, diabetes, multiples, and VBAC/TOLAC, maintaining safe patient ratios and delivering compassionate care in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Responsibilities:

Provide skilled nursing care to laboring and postpartum patients, including high-risk cases.
Manage labor actively, including induction, augmentation, and emergency interventions.
Monitor maternal and fetal status, recognizing and responding to complications promptly.
Collaborate with physicians, midwives, and interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement care plans.
Perform antepartum assessments and manage patients with conditions such as pre-eclampsia, diabetes, and multiples.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation using Epic charting system.
Adhere to patient-to-nurse ratios: Labor 1:2, Antepartum 1:3.
Educate patients and families regarding labor processes, interventions, and postpartum care.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with hospital policies and protocols.

Required Skills & Certifications:

Active Registered Nurse license in the state of practice.
Minimum of 2 years nursing experience, preferably in labor and delivery or acute care.
Strong clinical skills in managing high-risk labor and delivery patients.
Proficiency in Epic electronic medical record system.
Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, acute care environment.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

Experience with maternal emergencies including VBAC/TOLAC and active labor management.
Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
Previous experience in a Level II Trauma or Pediatric Trauma Center setting.

Special Considerations:

No on-call requirement.
Some weekend shifts required.
Float between units as needed.
Maintain patient ratios: Labor 1:2, Antepartum 1:3.
Work environment includes acute care high-risk labor and delivery.
48-hour shift approvals permitted.

Scheduling:

Schedule includes some weekend shifts.
No block scheduling required.
Shift assignments may vary due to float status between units.
