By integrating risk assessment, prevention, and recovery with the broader insurance experience, we help customers protect what matters most while building trust, long-term value, and sustainable advantages for both our customers and our enterprise.As an Energy Risk Engineering Consultant, you will provide direction and oversight for all assigned Energy accounts (Specifically oil and gas and sustainable/renewable energy) assuring that best-in-class services are targeted for our customers. Specific focus on battery energy storage systems, onshore wind turbines, EV charging, photovoltaic systems, open pit mining, fuel cells, electrical cooperatives, gas and electric utilities, transmission, upstream and midstream oil and gas. You will provide and implement formal service planning and direct initiatives to assure the delivery of exceptional energy specific risk engineering services that mitigate risk and increase client retention. In addition, the role will include technical evaluation of new business and existing written accounts for the Energy Unit where evaluation of risk and exposure identification and hazard/control assessment are required.Join us to continuously learn, expand your technical and consultative capabilities, and shape the future of risk engineering while delivering meaningful outcomes for customers and the enterprise.This role offers a remote work arrangement but requires the candidate to reside in Houston, TX to effectively support regional operations, clients, and partners. This position can be hired at various levels depending upon background and experienceResponsibilities:Strategic Risk Advisory & ConsultingAct as a strategic risk advisor, partnering with clients to proactively identify emerging risks and cocreate practical, value-added mitigation solutionsDemonstrate customer centricity and empathy by tailoring recommendations to each client’s industry, risk profile, and business prioritiesRisk Assessment & Service ExecutionConduct risk assessments and consultations with energy clients using onsite, hybrid, and virtual/digital delivery modelsDevelop and execute data driven service plans that address loss drivers, operational exposures, and client business objectivesCommunication & InfluenceTranslate complex technical findings into clear, compelling insights using storytelling with data for clients, agents, and underwriting partnersDigital Enablement & InnovationLeverage digital tools, analytics, and emerging technologies (e.g., dashboards, virtual tools, AI enabled insights) to enhance service quality, efficiency, and customer experienceContribute to a culture of innovation, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement within Risk EngineeringCollaboration & Growth EnablementCollaborate cross functionally with underwriting, claims, sales, data, and technical experts to deliver integrated risk solutionsIdentify opportunities to expand Risk Services offerings and support profitable growthLearning & Talent Development (by level)Engage in continuous learning to stay current on industry trends, emerging risks, and evolving technologiesParticipate in industry association discussions, meetings, training, webinars, etc., such as NREL, NABCEP, IRMIMentor, coach, and support less experienced risk engineering consultants as appropriate by role levelEducation, Professional Credentials and Experience – where appropriate5+ Years progressive experience in energy specific risk engineering, loss control, safety, or related consulting roles, with scope and complexity aligned to role levelBachelor’s degree (BA/BS) strongly desired with coursework focused on Occupational Safety and Health Studies, Energy related sciences, Engineering OR equivalent combination of education and experience.QualificationsStrong ability to assess risk, interpret loss data, identify trends, and develop targeted mitigation strategiesComfort using digital tools, analytics, and technology enabled platforms to deliver risk engineering servicesDemonstrated customer centric mindset with the ability to understand client priorities and tailor solutions accordinglyProven ability to provide proactive consultation, including anticipating client needs and influencing adoption of recommendationsStrong storytelling with data skills — translating technical findings into meaningful business insightsAdvanced written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical reports and delivery of client‑facing presentationsAbility to collaborate effectively across underwriting, claims, sales, agents, brokers, and technical partnersDigital fluency, including willingness to learn and adopt new tools, platforms, and AI‑enabled capabilitiesStrong commitment to continuous learning, with curiosity and initiative to expand technical expertise, strengthen consultative capabilities, and adopt new digital and AI-enabled tools to enhance customer impact.Preferred to have and maintain a recognized professional safety or risk management designation(s) such as: CSP, CIH, ERIS, or ARM.CompensationThe listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.
