In this role, the successful candidate is a highly trained allied health professional who provides various pathology services under the direction and supervision of a pathologist. Pathologists Assistants perform gross examination and dissection of anatomic pathology specimens. They prepare tissue for numerous pathological tests including frozen section diagnosis, histology, flow cytometry, and immunohistochemical staining. They may photograph gross and microscopic specimens, prepare educational conferences, and provide training to pathology residents. The duties also include a variety of tasks such as administrative, supervisory, and teaching duties. Job Responsibilities Assist supervisor, pathologists, housestaff, and management with any duties as assigned. Reconcile specimens, ensuring appropriate accessioning, labeling, logs, containers, blocks, and requisitions according to procedures. Obtain and appropriately apply clinical information to the analysis and interpretation of the surgical case. Accurately dictate gross description according to designated protocols and templates. Include all relevant details such as color, measurement, shape, weight, and review for accuracy and completion. Dissect specimens according to protocols. Prepare appropriate tissue samples for histological processing, frozen sections, flow cytometry, electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and other studies. Perform special procedures such as faxitron imaging and tumor triage. Photograph all appropriate gross specimens and microscopic slides. Correlate specimen information with the attending pathologist. Perform duties related to laboratory maintenance as needed. Clean workstation between and after case dissection. Ensure proper equipment maintenance, instrument sterilization, and waste disposal. Notify supervisor of low supplies and assist with inventory management. Assist in organizing and coordinating anatomic pathology conferences. Assist residents with training in gross examination, dissection, dictation procedures, cryostat use, faxitron, and digital photography as needed. Support residents in workflow management. Assist department and supervisor with QA/QI initiatives and compliance with CAP, NYSDOH, and Joint Commission standards relating to the gross room. Minimum Qualifications Graduate of a NAACLS accredited Pathology Assistant training program, or a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, biology, or a related field. Previous related experience in surgical pathology, gross dissection of surgical specimens, and frozen sections is required. NYSDOH license as a Pathologist Assistant is required. Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently. Required Licenses NYS Pathologist Assistant license. Preferred Qualifications National certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP-PA). Board certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP BOR). Certification through the American Association of Pathologist Assistants (AAPA). Experience working with residents and fellows. At least 2 years of experience as a Pathologist Assistant in a surgical pathology laboratory.
