The mission of the Bureau of Immunization (BOI) is to prevent the occurrence and transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) through comprehensive immunization programs. BOI promotes immunization across the lifespan from infancy through adulthood, works to eliminate disparities in vaccination coverage through data evaluation and support of equitable vaccination services, and actively responds to VPD outbreaks to mitigate their spread and impact on communities. The BOI surveillance unit is responsible for conducting surveillance of measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella, and invasive pneumococcal disease in children aged less than 5 years and assuring the institution of control measures and outbreak response. The surveillance unit is also responsible for the management and analysis of surveillance data and monitoring the impact of new vaccines.

The Public Health Epidemiologist (PHE II) will work under the supervision of the VPD Surveillance Unit Chief in BOI and oversee the Public Health Advisors who conduct intake, assign new cases, and perform case and contact investigations of suspected VPDs. The PHEII will provide guidance for investigations and coordinate testing with the Public Health Laboratory (PHL). They will ensure timely and accurate documentation of case and contact investigations in the surveillance database, Maven.

Job duties and responsibilities include overseeing Public Health Advisors, keeping abreast of the status of all ongoing case and contact investigations, communicating the status of all urgent cases to the Unit Chief, monitoring cases received in surveillance database (Maven), reviewing laboratory reports for suspected VPD cases and lab-related database workflows daily, ensuring that PHAs elicit and document all potential settings of exposure, supporting managing Maven system to monitor quality of data, performing data entry and data cleaning, supporting outbreak investigations and response, coordinating with public health officials in other US health jurisdictions to ensure case management, drafting the monthly surveillance unit report, supervising Public Health Advisors and ensuring adequate staff coverage for daily case management workflows, supporting surveillance, data management, and research activities under the supervision of the Unit Chief, participating in Agency-wide public health response activities as assigned, and participating in other BOI and Agency activities as needed and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A master's degree in public health or epidemiology from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 12 graduate credits in epidemiology; or
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university plus two years of full-time paid experience as a health professional in a position which requires data collection and the reading and interpretation of medical charts and medical information in support of surveillance and epidemiologic investigations.

Preferred Skills:

• Master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in Public Health.
• Experience conducting surveillance case investigations in public health practice.
• Excellent computer skills including MS Excel, MS Word, and Maven.
• Experience in creating and editing basic workflows and reports in Maven.
• Basic skills in statistical software, e.g., SAS.
• Excellent organizational skills, efficiency, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
