Scope of Work of each contractor's duties:
A contracted Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon at Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) San Diego would be responsible for a comprehensive range of clinical and surgical duties, catering to a diverse patient population of active-duty military personnel, their dependents, and retirees. The surgeon would be an integral part of the Orthopedic Surgery Department.
Clinical and Patient Care Responsibilities Evaluation and Diagnosis: Conduct thorough patient evaluations, including detailed medical histories, physical examinations, and the ordering and interpretation of diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. This includes both outpatient and inpatient consultations.
Non-Operative Management: Develop and oversee non-surgical treatment plans for a wide array of foot and ankle conditions. This includes prescribing medications, managing physical therapy referrals, and referring patients for orthotic devices.
Pre- and Post-Operative Care: Manage all phases of surgical care, from initial pre-operative assessments and patient education to post-operative follow-up, wound care, and rehabilitation protocols.
Patient Population: Treat a wide range of patients, from young, active-duty athletic personnel with sports-related injuries to older, retired veterans with degenerative conditions. The patient base also includes pediatric patients.
Surgical Responsibilities
Surgical Procedures: Perform a full spectrum of foot and ankle surgeries, including but not limited to:
Fracture fixation and trauma reconstruction for injuries sustained in both combat and non-combat settings.
Arthroscopic procedures for joint and cartilage repair.
Total ankle replacements and other joint reconstruction surgeries.
Tendon and ligament repair and reconstruction.
Correction of complex foot and ankle deformities.
High-Acuity and Complex Cases: Given NMCSD's role as referral hub, the surgeon must be proficient in managing complex, high-energy trauma, and severe extremity injuries.
Limb Salvage: Participate in complex limb salvage procedures, which may involve collaboration with other surgical subspecialties such as plastic and vascular surgery.
Administrative and Educational Duties
Medical Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records for all patient encounters and surgical procedures.
Teaching and Mentorship: As NMCSD is a major teaching hospital with a large orthopedic surgery residency program, the contracted surgeon would be expected to participate in the education and training of residents, medical students, and other medical personnel.
This could involve giving lectures, leading case conferences, and providing hands-on instructions in the operating room.
Collaboration: Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including other orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, physical therapists, and nurses to ensure comprehensive patient care.
On-Call Responsibilities: Will be required to participate in an on-call rotation to provide urgent/emergent orthopedic care to all Tricare beneficiaries.
During all call periods, the contractor is expected to be available to provide clinical guidance to residents, evaluate and manage orthopedic consultants, respond to urgent and emergent orthopedic conditions, and perform operative interventions clinically indicated in accordance with NMCSD facility policies and standards of care.
Special Considerations for a Military Environment
Operational Readiness: A key aspect of the role is to contribute to the operational readiness of active-duty service members by providing timely and effective care that enables them to return to their duties.
Research: Opportunities for clinical and basic science research are available and encouraged within the department.
CME: Contractors will be expected to maintain CME for the purpose of licensure and American Board of Orthopedic Surgery certification.
Perform a full range of physician services in accordance with privileges granted by the MTF.
Direct, perform, or assist in the instruction of other health care professionals within the scope of the clinical privileges or responsibilities.
