Veterinarian (Part-Time)

RESPONSIBILITIES Provide comprehensive medical and surgical care to all animals in shelter care, including physical examinations, diagnostics, medications, and treatments. Perform surgeries on shelter animals, such as spay/neuter, entropion, enucleation, mass removal, and amputation. Coordinate shelter medical operations, analyze and review medical protocols, and formulate and implement recommendations in collaboration with the Animal Health Manager. Continue to improve the Animal Health program, ensuring high‑quality medical care and services for shelter animals, including foster animals. Supervise animal health unit activities, delegating tasks to CVTs and Veterinary Assistants and monitoring quality of work. Identify, treat, and prevent health concerns to support live dispositions of animals whenever possible. Provide training to shelter staff and volunteers on medical topics, including medications, vaccinations, herd health, infectious disease, and quarantine procedures. Serve as an internal and external customer service liaison using effective communication with staff, volunteers, and the public. Guide and train Certified Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, and volunteers in medical treatments and protocols. Communicate diagnosis, discharge instructions, and medical care to the public via telephone, email, or in‑person interactions. QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a university outside the U.S. and a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience. Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Oregon, as outlined by ORS 686.020, and maintain the license throughout employment. Preferred: Two (2) years of veterinary practice experience and at least one year of supervisory experience with veterinary technicians in a clinic or shelter setting. Demonstrated experience or strong interest in high‑volume spay/neuter surgeries. Comprehensive knowledge of current best practices in veterinary services and animal sheltering. Ability to prepare and present accurate reports containing findings and recommendations, including documentation of cruelty/neglect or legal cases. Experience managing overall population/herd health in a shelter, including infectious disease outbreak management.
