BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this position is to assist the Chief of Police in managing crime prevention and law enforcement programs, activities and personnel. This is accomplished by performing administrative duties; supervising division commanders; coordinating crime prevention programs; supervising patrol division; reviewing reports and paperwork; ensuring vehicle maintenance; providing training; and performing scheduling. Other duties include serving as Chief of Police in the Chief’s absence. Requires extensive knowledge of computer‑based programs: Tyler RMS, Brazos, CJIS, TLETS, Axon Evidence, Google Drive, CRIS Crash, Excel, Word and other relevant programs.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Administrative duties (20%): plan and coordinate law enforcement and support activities; conduct studies; prepare reports and improvement plans; recommend new technologies. Supervising division commanders (20%): direct supervision of division commanders, develop training programs, conduct background investigations. Coordinating crime prevention programs (20%): meet with community organizations; provide input on traffic and special events. Reviewing reports and paperwork (20%): verify completion and accuracy; check daily activity reports; review time cards and municipal court summons; prepare communications. Providing training (10%): serve as classroom and practical instructor for firearms, FTO, and other topics. Scheduling (10%): maintain personnel schedules, bailiff duty, schedule officers for time off and training. Other duties include serving as Chief of Police in the Chief’s absence.JOB REQUIREMENTS
Formal Education: Six to twelve months of training beyond high school. Experience: Over 7 years officer experience; 3 years supervisory experience. Supervision: Ability to supervise performance, provide hiring and disciplinary guidance, and realign work as needed. Human Collaboration Skills: Provide policy recommendations; negotiate sensitive issues. Freedom to Act: Limited direction; autonomy in assignments. Technical Skills: Comprehensive practical knowledge of technical field with analytical judgment and decision making. Budget Responsibility: Prepare documents and research for budget allocations. Reading: Intermediate reading ability on various texts. Math: Basic arithmetic operations. Writing: Intermediate writing ability for reports, letters, summaries. Certification & Other Requirements: Advanced Peace Officers License; Valid Driver’s License.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
