Summary: The primary responsibility of a phlebotomist is to assist in executing various assigned tasks, diagnosing issues, providing training, and offering suggestions to enhance workflow efficiency.

Position Responsibilities:

Experience in blood collection, specimen labeling, centrifuging samples, documenting maintenance activities and decontamination, updating patient records, etc.

Gathers and preserves specimens following established protocols.

Explains the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and/or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) clearly and politely. Demonstrates techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.

Fully comprehends all physician instructions.

Matches lab requisition forms with specimen tubes.

Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes samples as per test requisitions.

Verifies all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts for accuracy. Packages specimens for transportation.

Stores specimen samples at required temperatures, places samples in suitable collection containers/tubes, accurately labels them, follows specified procedures for transport to maintain sample integrity. Adheres to OSHA and DEP regulations.

Participates in annual departmental training sessions.

Answers phone calls, interprets lab results to address inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications:

Valid certification in Phlebotomy required for the state of employment in some states. At least 6 months’ experience performing venipunctures in a busy laboratory or hospital environment. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or equivalent
