Transportation Specialist

City of Santa Fe Springs

Position Summary Churchill County is hiring for a new full-time Transportation Specialist. This position typically works Monday through Friday and plays a vital role in supporting senior citizens in our community. The Transportation Specialist delivers nutritious meals to homebound seniors through the Meals on Wheels program and provides safe, reliable transportation to medical and other essential appointments. In addition, this role is responsible for completing routine bus inspections and assisting seniors and individuals with disabilities in accessing vital services through the CART program. Essential Functions Incumbent may be asked to perform other duties as required. The following are core responsibilities: Demonstrates regular, reliable, and punctual attendance. Inspects vehicle to ensure it is clean and in operable condition; completes inspection paperwork; reports need for service or repair; ensures vehicles are scheduled for routine maintenance. Assists with packing and transporting meals to isolated or homebound senior citizens and residents with disabilities. Drives vehicle to and from various locations, following a pre‑established schedule or on an on‑call basis; adjusts schedules as required. Maintains driver log; lists client name, address and other information for each trip when required. Transports meals and beverages to the homebound, ensuring safe delivery; reports unusual circumstances such as no one home or no response at the door to the Senior Center Manager. Ensures temperatures of meals meet regulatory requirements. Communicates client welfare concerns to Senior Center Manager. Washes and cleans the interior of the vehicle; fuels the vehicle. Participates in in‑service training to update skills and learn techniques for dealing with various clients. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the division’s service by offering suggestions and by participating as an active member of a work team. Represents the County with dignity, integrity and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public. Qualifications High School diploma/GED; and one (1) year of customer service experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Required Knowledge and Skills Laws, rules and regulations for operating a motor vehicle in the state of Nevada. Food safety and handling principles, practices and equipment related to the work. County geography. Standard office practices and procedures, including records management. Communicating effectively in oral and written forms. Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds, in person and over the telephone. Skill Areas Working without close supervision in standard work situations. Maintaining accurate records of work performed. Understanding and following oral and written directions. Driving a vehicle skillfully and safely. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work. Dealing effectively with disabled individuals and others needing special assistance. Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or division goals, objectives and activities. Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations Nevada Driver’s License. First Aid, CPR and elder abuse training/certification within three (3) months of date of employment. Physical Demands and Working Environment Mobility to work in a transportation setting and operate a motor vehicle; strength and agility to lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds; stamina to sit for extended periods; vision and hearing to read printed materials and communicate. Work may involve exposure to travel, bodily fluids, fumes, noise and chemicals. Conditions of Employment Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation. New employees must submit to a background investigation and, if hired for a safety‑sensitive position, a drug/alcohol screen. Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug/alcohol screen (if applicable).
