With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.OverviewJoby Aviation is seeking a passionate individual with composite and metallic design experience to join our airframe structures design team. In this role you will be responsible for the development & detailed designs of structural airframe components. You will be deeply involved in everything from preliminary concept work through production support. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of CAD design and is able to do hand calculations and create detailed models and drawings. If you also have hands-on experience with composite fabrication or machining metal parts - this could be the ideal position for you! Further, you will work collaboratively across our electronics, wiring systems, structural analysis, and manufacturing teams.ResponsibilitiesDesign lightweight composite/metallic structural aircraft componentsPerform initial layout and sizingFastener sizing, bond area sizing, and rivetingComposite <-> metallic material compatibility, and galvanic corrosionDetailed drawing creation, and GD&TDirect communication with vendors and technicians for manufacturingConsult frequently with team leadsRequiredB.S. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or relevant field of study2+ years of relevant industry work experience Experience with composite and metallic component/structural design and analysisExcellent problem solving and communication skillsUnderstanding of static and structural hand-calculationsProficiency in CADExperience drafting using GD&TExperience utilizing multiple manufacturing processes, such as subtractive, additive, carbon fiber composite lay-up, and injection moldingAble to work onsite (position is based in Santa Cruz, CA)DesiredM.S./Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or relevant field of study5+ years of relevant industry work experience Experience integrating systems for aircraftExperience with Dassault Systemes/Catia CADProficiency in composite structures designExperience in composites manufacturingExperience with finite element tools (Abaqus)Aircraft homebuilding or rapid prototyping experience is a plusAdditional InformationCompensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $97,600 - $162,500/yr.
