About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse - Emergency Department Profession: RN Specialty: Emergency Department Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 07:00 - 19:00 Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience required License: Current Registered Nurse license Certifications: TNCC within one year of hire; BLS; ACLS and PALS within one year of hire Must-Have: Minimum 2-3 years of experience, Level IV Trauma experience Description: Provides direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting. Provides care that reflects initiative, flexibility, and responsibility indicative of professional expectations with minimal supervision. Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient status, symptomatology, and results of diagnostic studies. Able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Demonstrates competency in the following areas: Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required, and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care. Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy. Ability to assess and reassess pain and pain management techniques utilized. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of patients and correctly interpret the results. Knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias, and treats appropriately. Accurately assigns triage categories. Performs and documents an in-depth nursing history, including chief complaint, health status, and other pertinent information with a 100% completion rate, as evidenced by random audit. Maintains accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses, and assessment of changes. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and families. Functions as a liaison between Administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers. Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient's age-specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group. Interacts professionally with patients and families and involves patients and families in the formation of the plan of care. Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates the effectiveness of learning; family is included in teaching as appropriate. Maintains current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on the age of the patient and his/her clinical condition. Prepares, hangs, monitors, and discontinues IV fluids. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Maintains a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families. Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment. Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives, maintaining good employee relations and interdepartmental objectives. Assists physicians with procedures in the Emergency Department. Assists in the orientation of new employees to the Emergency Department. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops. Shows responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Assists in implementing core measures. Professional Requirements: Ensures that appearance and personal conduct are professional at all times. Maintains an excellent attendance record. Reports to work on time and as scheduled. Wears appropriate clothing for job functions. Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, health plans, and staff. Completes annual educational requirements. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times. Maintains regulatory requirements. Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly. Attends annual review and department in-services as scheduled. Attends staff meetings and reads and returns meeting minutes. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (QI) activities. Communicates the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Regulatory Requirements: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, preferably with at least six months previous emergency department or acute care RN experience. Exceptions may be made based on experience and work history. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.
