(Start Date: July 1, 2026.) The following details outline the position. GRADE: Athletic Coaches’ Supplement Schedule + Playoff Supplement FLSA: Exempt REPORTS TO: Athletic Director and Principal SUPERVISES: Assistant Coaches, if any TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fall Sports Season Qualifications Must meet requirements established by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, NC Department of Public Instruction, the MCS Board of Education, and school administration. Teacher licensure and employment as a teacher by the MCS Board of Education is strongly preferred. Previous successful volleyball coaching experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policies approved by the Martin County Schools Board of Education and is responsibility for their implementation by the entire staff of the sports program. Knowledge of existing school system, state, and conference regulations; implements them consistently and interprets them for staff. Understanding of the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests of grievances through proper channels. Awareness of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff. Designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to insure staff awareness of overall program. Delegates specific duty, supervises implementation, and at season’s end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants. Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation. Assists the Athletic Director in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for tournament and special sport events. Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees. Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility. Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites. Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant. Gives constant attention to a student athlete’s grades and conduct. Is present at all practices and games. Provides assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant. Completes and submits proper paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries to athletic office within 24 hours. Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians. Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary and contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. Participates in the budgeting function with the Athletic Director by establishing requirements for the next season. Recommends guidelines as to type, style, color, or technical specifications of equipment. Responsible for operating within budget appropriations. Is accountable for all equipment and/or collection of fees for any lost or unreturned equipment. Arranges for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment and submit annual inventory and current records. Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizes who may enter, issues or requisitions equipment. Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Is responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment. Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty. Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use. Promotes the sport within the school through recruiting athletes who are not in another sports program. Promotes the sport outside the school through news media, community recreation programs, or in any other feasible manner. Responsible for the quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written release to local media. Maintains good public relations with news media, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans. Presents information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results. Performs other duties as assigned by the school Principal in keeping with Martin County Board of Education Policy and North Carolina Administrative Code and Statutes. Physical and Cognitive Requirements The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the Head Volleyball Coach job classification within Martin County Schools. Work in this classification is considered light to heavy physical work (depending on the sport) requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Position may also require a lot of standing, walking, kneeling, squatting, pushing, pulling, and running. Must be able to: Prepare, read and comprehend a variety of job related forms, reports, spreadsheets, maps, plans, records, documentation and correspondence in all languages required by the job. Understand and conform to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style. Speak to individuals or groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence. Respond adequately to inquiries or complaints. Write using standard convention in all languages required by the job. Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form. Communicate effectively and efficiently in all languages required by the job using whatever communication device or system is required (telephone, Braille). Use/interpret job related terminology, mathematical formulas and functions effectively and efficiently. Deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations. Be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons. Operate a motor vehicle. Operate/use a variety of automated office machines and other office equipment. Operate/use a variety of audiovisual/electronic machines and devices. Operate/use a variety of communication machines/equipment/devices. Operate/use a variety of job specific machines/equipment. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors with possible exposure to excessive heat and cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee will come into direct contact with MCS staff, students, and the public.
