Counselor

American Habitare & Counseling, Inc. (AHC) is an opioid treatment program founded in 1998 in Newark, New Jersey to meet the urgent need for substance use services in the inner-city community. Over more than 20 years, AHC has provided care to thousands of patients affected by opioid use disorder and related challenges. The organization offers medication management, individual and group counseling, and Intensive Outpatient services. AHC also provides medical and co-occurring treatment to support patients holistically, addressing both physical and behavioral health needs. Team members join a mission-driven environment focused on recovery, dignity, and long-term wellness. Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Counselor role based in Newark, NJ. The Counselor will provide individual and group counseling to patients receiving opioid treatment services, using evidence-informed approaches that support recovery and harm reduction. Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting intake assessments, developing and updating treatment plans, documenting services and progress notes, and coordinating care with medical and behavioral health providers. The Counselor will facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic groups, monitor patient progress, and advocate for needed services and supports. Additional duties include participating in interdisciplinary team meetings, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, and engaging in ongoing professional development. Qualifications Clinical counseling skills, including assessment, treatment planning, and delivery of individual and group therapy in substance use treatment settings. Knowledge of opioid use disorder, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and co-occurring mental health conditions, with the ability to apply best practices in care. Strong communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills to collaborate with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams. Ability to maintain professional boundaries, uphold confidentiality, and follow ethical and regulatory standards in behavioral health care. Relevant licensure or certification (e.g., LAC, LCSW, LPC, CADC, or equivalent) in New Jersey, or eligibility to obtain required credentials. Bachelor's or Master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, or a related behavioral health field. Experience in opioid treatment programs, intensive outpatient programs, or community behavioral health is preferred.
