The Role The Executive Director Nursing position has overall responsibility for the operation of Acute Care Services, the Children’s Hospital and Women’s Services at SHMC. The Executive Director assures that the provision of these clinical services are integrated into the ministry's performance improvement plan and are in support of the Providence Saint Joseph Health overall strategic plan with a focus on highly reliable care and appropriate utilization of resources. As a member of the hospital Senior Leadership Team, the Executive Director assumes an active leadership role inter-professionally and works collaboratively to ensure an integrated system for delivery of care. With a constant focus on whole person care, quality, staff and patient safety, the Executive Director Nursing maintains standards and systems for care delivery at their ministry. These systems of care delivery promote evidence-based practice and are designed to support the management of productivity targets, patient acuity, and appropriate planning for and use of available resources. What You’ll Do Overall responsibility for the management and operations of the inpatient nursing departments for both adults and children’s hospital, including productivity, quality, and assures following the terms of the CBA as appropriate. Responsible for the operation of the Professional Nursing Practice and nursing clinical operations within the ministry. This position directs nursing services by approval and implementation of nursing policies, procedures, standards, and staffing plans. Assumes active role as the key point person for nursing to staff, physicians, and the community on behalf of the CNO/COO. Responsible for the practice of nursing throughout the areas of responsibility, policies, procedures, standards, education, and staffing plans. Assures that nursing practice is evidence-based, and meets all regulatory, safety, and moves towards top-of-license performance. Works closely with the service line directors, shared services, and other leaders to represent nursing and patient care for the inpatient services. Dyad partner with Medicine Division Chief and works with key physicians to work towards goals for inpatient care. Creates a strong sense of team between the various departments to work together in a trusting environment for the betterment of patient care including efficiencies, safety standards, innovative care delivery models, and strategic implementation of initiatives. Works collaboratively with ministry executives, medical staff, nursing staff, and shared service leaders to ensure an integrated system for the delivery of specialty services. Focuses on ensuring that business and clinical development is in alignment with a shifting healthcare landscape and PSJH vision. Ensures that the provision of unique services meets community needs, is high in quality and service, and has sustainable financial performance. Establishes an environment that values diversity in which care is delivered in a manner sensitive, socially and culturally. Creates the operational objectives, goals, and specific strategies required to achieve the strategic outcome set by the CEO and COO and aligns value-based care delivery models. Evaluates the outcomes and effectiveness of delivery models. Articulates the value contribution of services through preparation and delivery of business communications, presentations, reports, meetings, balanced scorecards, and project communication plans. Assesses needs and expectations of stakeholders, presents results of data analysis to decision makers, and provides and receives constructive feedback. Oversees preparation and maintenance of applicable departmental operating and capital budgets by anticipating expected revenues and expenses to achieve organizational objectives. Develops a facilities planning and capital replacement program and evaluates facility capabilities in order to meet the ongoing operations needs of the organization. Participates in the negotiation and monitoring of contract compliance (e.g., physicians, service providers). Identifies marketing opportunities and collaborates with marketing experts. Creates an organizational climate that encourages teamwork, fosters mutual trust and motivation, and engages a high level of commitment to the purpose and values of the organization, as well as facilitates and encourages caregiver involvement and collaborative relationships. Uses knowledge of patient safety science (e.g., human factors, complex adaptive systems, LEAN and Six Sigma, high reliability organization) to manage and promote change. Builds effective administrator and physician teams. Provides and maintains effective communications with medical staff, the community, and all levels of supervision and staff. Rounds for improved visibility and to meet specific goals such as safety. Serves on community-based boards, advisory groups, task forces, and committees as they relate or as requested. Ensures compliance with state and federal regulatory agency standards, federal labor standards, and policies of the organization. Ensures that written organizational clinical policies and procedures are reviewed and updated in accordance with evidence-based practice. Integrates bioethical and legal dimensions into clinical and management decision-making. Supports the development of an organization-wide patient safety program including safety surveys and responding to and acting on safety recommendations. Supports a Just Culture (non-punitive) reporting environment, supporting a reward system for identifying unsafe practices. Supports and mentors high-potential talent within the organization and develops a leadership succession plan. Creates a strong sense of team between the various departments to work together in a trusting environment for the betterment of patient care including efficiencies, safety standards, regulatory compliance, and implementation of strategic initiatives. What You’ll Bring Education & Credentials Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, and Master's Degree in Nursing, Health Administration, Business, Public Health, or Management. Required upon hire: Washington Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed). Experience & Expertise 10 or more years of progressive clinical leadership experience including senior-level nursing management experience in a position of authority and responsibility commensurate with the scope and complexity of patient care needs of the patient population served in a complex healthcare delivery organization. Experience in Women & Children’s Services experience strongly preferred. Leadership of multiple nursing units (e.g. OB/Maternity, Surgical) as this position oversees multiple nursing specialty units. Leadership experience with physicians and a record of success in working with medical staff leaders. Experience working collaboratively with represented nursing units and demonstrated experience of successfully engaging represented staff in shared governance. The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.
