Patient Financial Counselor II

Position Summary Reporting to the Supervisor, Financial Counseling Shared Services, this position effectively captures patient liabilities while providing financial counseling to patients and guarantors who require assistance in seeking and applying for healthcare funding (e.g., Charity Care or other local/governmental assistance programs) and/or reviewing and establishing payment options before service, at time of service, and post‑service. Determines the financial status of the patient during the financial counseling process and coordinates benefit authorization and management. Ensures compliance and provides exceptional customer service when working with patients and guarantors. Contributes to the success of a high‑performing shared services organization by helping to drive the long‑term Johns Hopkins Medicine Shared Services vision and fostering continuous improvement in business processes and services. Education High School Diploma or equivalent. Location Bayview Medical Center, 4940 Eastern Ave, Baltimore, MD. 100% onsite role. Monday‑Friday, flexible day hours. Licensure / Certifications Certified Application Counselor (CAC) certification within 6–12 months. Work Experience Minimum of two years’ experience in a hospital, clinic, insurance company, managed care organization, or other financial service setting performing financial counseling, financial clearance, and/or customer service activities. Skills Knowledge of insurance and governmental programs, regulations, and application processes (e.g., Medicaid) and managed care contracts. Knowledge of medical and insurance terminology and understanding of healthcare insurance. General knowledge of patient access financial counseling functions in acute and non‑acute settings preferred. Working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations. Basic computer, math, and Microsoft Office skills. Ability to understand, interpret, evaluate, and resolve complex issues. Excellent time management, verbal and written communication, and active listening skills. Bilingual preferred. Interpersonal skills to develop positive relationships with clinical staff. Accuracy, attentiveness to detail, and a personal presence characterized by honesty, integrity, and caring. Ability to follow policies and procedures set by Financial Counseling Shared Services. Self‑management of work priorities and adaptability to change. Capacity to handle a variety of tasks and projects in a stressful environment with diverse personalities and work styles. Ability to meet or exceed customer service, productivity, and quality standards. Maintenance of confidential information. Salary Range Minimum $20.52/hour to Maximum $33.88/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. Benefits The Hospital reserves the right to modify employee schedules as needed.
