Lead Heavy Diesel Mechanic

Casella Construction is looking for a hardworking and motivated Lead Heavy Diesel Mechanic to join our Maintenance Department in Fort Edward, NY. The Lead Heavy Diesel Mechanic’s shift is Monday – Friday, 11:00 AM - 8:30 PM at our shop in Fort Edward, NY. The Lead Heavy Diesel Mechanic is responsible for day-to-day equipment maintenance and minor to major repairs on our diverse fleet which consists of Mack triaxle dump trucks, Kenworth T880 & W900 Diesel tractors. The Lead Heavy Diesel Mechanic would also be working on our trailers as well: live floor, dump and lowboy trailers. We offer our employees the opportunity to grow personally and professionally. The ideal candidate will have experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy-duty diesel vehicles and equipment. This role requires technical expertise, physical stamina, and a commitment to safety and quality. Responsibilities Lead and perform routine maintenance, including oil changes, brake inspections, and filter replacements. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform repairs along with assigned preventive maintenance services on all fleet vehicles (Diesel and LNG tractors, trailers, and other related parts). Review and complete repairs identified on Driver Vehicle Inspection reports. Complete all paperwork on fleet vehicles utilizing fleet maintenance software program associated with repairing vehicles, parts usage and repair times. Mentor and advise team members on best proper procedures and standard operating procedures. Use diagnostic tools and software to identify faults and recommend solutions. Weld and fabricate components as needed. Adhere to safety protocols and environmental regulations. Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding job status and issues. Keep work areas clean and organized. Training requirements, both in person and online, as needed or required. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry heavy parts and tools (50+ lbs). Capable of standing, bending, kneeling, and lying in awkward positions for extended periods. Comfortable working in hot, cold, dirty, or noisy environments. Strong hand-eye coordination and grip strength. Ability to climb ladders and maneuver in tight spaces. Good vision and hearing (with or without corrective aids). Flexibility to twist, reach, and stretch during repairs. Qualifications Minimum of 5 years of Diesel engine repair work. 1+ years of experience as a lead technician or lead mechanic in a heavy mechanic shop. High School Diploma or GED. Must be 18 years or older. Considerable knowledge in equipment maintenance and repair gained through formal training or on the job experience. Must be able to handle major repairs. Experience with both tractor and trailer PMs and repairs. Basic computer skills and knowledge. Ability to safely lift a minimum of 50 lbs. Must be able to squat, bend and work in confined areas for extended periods of time. Proficient in diagnosing and managing regular scheduled maintenance schedules. Experience in welding and fabrication. Hydraulic system troubleshooting and repair. Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities. Effective communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently. Must have own tools. Preferred Qualifications Class A and Class B CDL desirable. OSHA 10 Certification or ability to obtain certification. Proficient in diagnosing and managing regular scheduled maintenance schedules. Attributes Ability to remain flexible as assignments change. Ability to listen, understand, and follow directions. Good communication skills both verbal and written. Exhibit attention to detail. Strong bias for action and sense of urgency. Resolves issues quickly. This range reflects the base pay we reasonably expect to offer for this position at the time of posting, considering current market conditions and industry benchmarks.
