Actuary I (Life and Health Actuary) This position performs routine (journey‑level) actuarial work in the Life and Health Actuarial Office of the Life and Health Division. Work involves performing actuarial analyses and providing advice to staff on actuarial matters. The Life and Health Actuarial Office reviews rates for life and health insurance policies. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Responsibilities Conducts actuarial review and analysis of life, health, and HMO rate filings to ensure compliance with the Texas Insurance Code and Texas Administrative Code Prepares summaries of findings and makes recommendations for the approval or disapproval of regulated rates Assists in the actuarial review of life and health policies, contract forms, and endorsements Reviews actuarial opinions, reports, and memorandums for rate filings, form filings, and information submitted to comply with rate filing requirements or special data requests Conducts research, assists with data calls, assists with data review and analysis, and assists with the preparation of technical reports to monitor the insurance market Assists in assessing the impact of existing and proposed legislation or policies on agency programs with regard to actuarial matters and may provide input on rules and proposed legislation Performs other duties as assigned Qualifications Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a degree in statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, or a field related to the assignment A qualified applicant without credentials as an Associate of the Society of Actuaries is expected to achieve such credentials via passage of relevant actuarial exams within a period of time after employment. This period of time is six years, which is proportionately reduced based on the estimated percent completion toward associateship represented by the exams passed Regular work attendance Education and experience relevant to position requirements may be substituted for one another on a year‑for‑year basis Additional Qualifications Professional exams passed toward associateship in the Society of Actuaries or membership in the American Academy of Actuaries must be listed in the application, resume, or cover letter Six months' experience in the actuarial field and one exam toward associateship in the Society of Actuaries Experience in life and health insurance Required Knowledge State laws, rules, procedures, and regulations relevant to job requirements Actuarial formulas, methods, and procedures Loss reserving and pricing methods, assumptions, and calculations Required Skills Problem solving and critical thinking Using Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint Using personal computers sufficient to enter and extract data from related systems and programs such as Centralized Accounting Payroll and Personnel (CAPPS) and other systems required to perform the job Applying actuarial principles and techniques Demonstrated Abilities Communicate and work effectively with a wide range of people with varied skills, knowledge, and backgrounds Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information Analyze and solve work-related problems and work independently on a variety of administrative work and technical assignments Manage and coordinate multiple tasks and priorities to meet necessary deadlines Work both independently and as a team player Develop, prepare, and present technical reports, correspondence, and presentations for consumers, public officials, industry representatives, and other groups Research and solve problems Interpret rules, regulations, policies, and procedures Military Employment Preference Military employment preference is available, but no specific application instructions are included here. #J-18808-Ljbffr CAPPS
