Description

General Summary

The nursing assistant is a non-professional staff member who provides, to patients, personal care and assistance under the supervision of the Physician and Mid-level practitioner(s). This care is provided in accordance with a plan of care that is prescribed and written by the physician and/or the mid-level practitioner.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Escort patient to exam rooms and take B/P, temperature and record height and weight. Make a note of past medical history and any complaints, review medications.
• Responsible for any miscellaneous phone calls to patients.
• Refill prescriptions as guided by the physician/mid-level provider.
• File correspondence in patient files/EMR for respective provider.
• Make sure all dated supplies, (samples, medication, vaccinations, etc.) are in date and dispose of out dated supplies.
• Assist physician/midlevel provider with procedures here and in the hospital.
• Restock exam rooms with needed supplies.
• Perform venipunctures, EKG's, and drug screens as needed
• Order supplies.
• Maintains confidentiality of all patient information.
• Assumes responsibility for following through on delegated duties
• Clean and package instruments to be sent for sterilization.
• Answers and documents all incoming telephone calls.
• Other duties as assigned by the physician/mid-level practitioner

Qualifications

Physical Requirements

• Basic lifting/bending: Boxes, medical equipment, patient care.
• Basic twisting, turning: During above functions.
• Basic vigorous walking: Daily functions of transferring patients to care area during a fast paced, busy clinic.
• Basic prolonged standing: During daily functions at nursing workstations.
• Visual acuity to observe patients for assessment and data collection, to use manual documentation tools.
• Auditory acuity to hear patient's verbal communication and gather data using auscultatory skills.
• Emotional stability conductive to dealing with patients, and family members.
• Strength to perform the following lifting tasks:
• Floor to waist - 40 pounds
• 14" to waist - 50 pounds
• Waist to shoulder - 20 pounds
• Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds
• Carry 40 pounds for 30 feet
• Push 40 pounds/force for 30 feet
• Pull 40 pounds/force for 10 feet

Reporting Relationship

Reports to Office Manager/Respective Physician or Mid-Level Practitioner.

Education, Knowledge and Abilities Required

• Must be certified, or registered by the Illinois Department of Registration as a Nursing Assistant or have a valid CNA license.
• Visual acuity to hear patient verbal communication and gather date using auscultatory skills.
• Must be able to follow directions.

Infection Exposure Risk Level

Category 1 – Maximal Risk – this job exposes you to potential blood, body fluids and tissues on a routine basis. It is recommended that you get the Hepatitis B vaccine.

Working Conditions

• Works in patient care areas where there are few discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise, and the like.
• Works with patients and may be exposed to contagious diseases or infectious materials but potential for personal harm and injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions and equipment are used.
• May be required to work beyond regular clinic hours.
