Custodian

Second shift: 2pm-10:30pm

Job Summary: The Custodian is responsible for cleaning and maintaining assigned areas. Works closely with Lead/Head custodian to provide an environment for students, teachers and other employees that is a credit to the custodial/maintenance profession. May be assigned to special custodial/maintenance projects related to the needs of the district.

Essential Duties (May include, but not limited to):

1. Ensures assigned areas are neat and clean; keeps floors in clean and attractive condition according to district standards.
2. Operates equipment, i.e. floor scrubbers/polishers, carpet cleaning equipment, tractors, lawn mowers, snow removal equipment, and leaf blowers as appropriate to the assignment.
3. Assists in the maintenance of equipment, vehicles, machinery, heating and air conditioning equipment in the assigned area in accordance with owner operation manuals.
4. Drives district-owned/personal vehicles between facilities, to and from business establishments, repair shops, etc., as appropriate to the assignment.
5. Keeps assigned exterior areas and premises including sidewalks, driveways, grounds and outdoor learning centers, safe, neat and clean at all times as appropriate to the assignment.
6. Sets up, arranges and moves furniture and equipment for meetings and other events within and between facilities as required.
7. Responsible for opening, closing, and overall building security as assigned.
8. Cleans rooms, toilet facilities, corridors, walls, floors, windows and other areas in accordance with district standards.
9. Documents daily work activities on forms as established for the program/assignment.
10. Reports supply and repair needs to building Lead/Head Custodian.
11. Regulates and maintains proper temperature standards as assigned.
12. Communicates with building Lead/Head Custodian on building/grounds needs that relate to building appearance, safety, inspections of equipment, bleachers and access ramps, as appropriate to the assignment.
13. Follows daily work schedules and communicates work that was not completed to Lead/Head Custodian as assigned.
14. Must follow board policies, established administrative guidelines, and safety regulations.
15. Consistently models Win-Win leadership.

Other Duties:

1. Sees that the American flag is flown each work day and is displayed within the building in an appropriate manner. Flies, displays and stores the American flag in accordance with recommended governmental standards.
2. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent. Valid Michigan driver's license and current certificate of automobile insurance. Must have reliable transportation and be willing and able to drive personal vehicle between assigned worksites/locations.

Experience:
Custodial and building care experience preferred, however not required. Genesee Intermediate School District provides a hands-on comprehensive custodian training program.

Skills/Other:
Must be physically able to bend, stoop, lift, squat, carry, stand, climb, push/pull and use other motor skills necessary to perform the essential duties as needed in the assigned area of responsibility. Ability to accept direction and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to learn and demonstrate proper use of equipment, i.e. floor scrubbers/polishers, carpet cleaning equipment, tractors, lawn mowers, snow removal equipment and leaf blowers. Ability to use a computer, and work to maintain proficiency, as required skill sets change with technology and/or the needs of the district. Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a variety of custodial/maintenance-related assignments in order to meet the changing needs of the district required. Problem-solving skills and ability to exercise good judgment.
