Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Third Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: No experience required License: Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license Certifications: BLS Must-Have: ADN or ASN Description: The RN implements professional nursing practice centered on the patient as a whole person. The focus is on creating a caring environment centered on healing and wellness. Nursing practices are based on evidence and current research, as well as policies and procedures. Clinical decision-making incorporates all phases of the nursing process, critical thinking, and creativity. Nursing excellence is promoted through helping relationships among nursing staff and across disciplines. The RN coordinates, ensures, and provides direct patient care activities on the unit. This includes the provision of nursing rounds, assessments, and treatments. Facilitating admission, transfer, and discharge activities is also essential. The RN provides patient and family-centered education and care coordination. The RN performs and documents a comprehensive assessment in accordance with the RN's scope of practice. Consideration is given to the patient’s culture, age, and developmental level. The RN identifies patient risk factors and presenting complaints. Health information is obtained from family or others as necessary. Objective and subjective data is collected to inform care. The initial admission assessment is verified if obtained by other team members. A problem list is developed, prioritizing patient needs based on input from the inter-professional team. The RN designs actions and interventions relevant to the patient’s culture and age. Desired outcomes are determined in coordination with the patient and family. The RN fully implements patient care therapies and procedures with clinical autonomy. The RN explains procedures, treatments, and processes to the patient and family. Actions are initiated to alleviate the patient’s stress and discomfort. The RN recognizes, responds to, and communicates changes in patient condition appropriately. Ongoing assessments and responses to procedures and therapies are documented. The RN delegates tasks appropriately and oversees team members in patient care activities. The accuracy and completeness of delegated patient care are monitored. The RN identifies and addresses educational needs of patients according to their comprehension levels. Facilitating the discharge process is a critical responsibility. The RN executes discharge orders in a timely manner and assures performance of discharge teaching. Input is provided into patient/nurse assignments based on staffing and patient acuity. Active participation in unit-based activities in support of organizational values and priorities is expected. The RN promotes a positive group dynamic and healing environment. Nursing excellence is assured in accordance with accepted standards and evidence-based practices. Active participation in quality improvement activities is encouraged. A holistic perspective is used regarding patient care.
