Auto Services Technician

Auto Services Technician – Grade 10, Department: Highways, FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Reports To: Assistant Fleet Manager and/or Fleet Services Coordinator. General Definition of Work Performs advanced skilled work and diagnostics maintaining and repairing a variety of vehicles and equipment. Direction is provided by the Assistant Fleet Manager, and/or Fleet Services Coordinator. Essential Functions / Typical Tasks Perform COMAR 11.22 MDOT and/or State of Maryland vehicle inspections; compile records and reports on work performed; maintain fleet inventory records. Assist in design, fabrication and installation of specialty parts such as electrical wiring and brackets for new components. Perform welding and fabrication tasks; clean and maintain tools, equipment, and shop facilities; perform repairs and upgrades to shop facilities; complete MOSHA/OSHA, MDE and other building/equipment inspections. Load and move equipment; remove, replace and/or overhaul engines, transmissions and other major/minor components; mount and balance tires. Perform preventive maintenance on mowing equipment, pumps, compressors and trailers and other major components and subassemblies. Diagnose and repair hybrid, electric, gasoline, flex‑fuel, propane and diesel‑powered vehicles and equipment, drivetrain, hydraulic and pneumatic suspension systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, pneumatic and hydraulic braking systems. Perform starting and charging system tests; rewire trucks and vehicles; install electrical and hydraulic components or accessories. Check and repair or replace various standard parts and assemblies such as generators, starter motors, wiper motors/blades, drive/timing belts/chains, ball joints, king‑pins, brake linings/pads, wheel bearings, half‑shafts and axles. Diagnose and repair cooling, air‑conditioning, and hydraulic systems. Supervise less skilled technicians, mechanics or helpers. Perform electronic powertrain fault diagnosis using scanners, CAN laptops, analyzers and meters. Use industrial sand blasting equipment and techniques. Review technical service bulletins and reports; interact with computers, the Internet and software programs. Order replacement parts and equipment using communication devices, computers and software. Clean and maintain tool, equipment and shop facilities and grounds. Perform standard automotive services such as lubrication, oil changes, fueling, cleaning or greasing parts. Perform engine tune‑ups and adjustments to valves, spark plug gaps, ignition systems, lights, brakes and clutches; ensure compliance with emissions standards and handle manufacturer recalls. Assist with snow and ice removal and other emergency operating conditions, including truck driving. Install and repair electronic and radio equipment. Perform related work as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Advanced knowledge of engine operation, common malfunctions, repair/diagnostic practices and preventive maintenance techniques for internal combustion engines and various vehicle systems and sub‑assemblies. Knowledge of SMAW/MIG and oxy/acetylene welding and/or cutting. Ability to drive and/or operate any County vehicle, machine or equipment. Develop effective work methods; understand and carry out detailed, complex instructions; prepare and maintain maintenance reports, records and service operations. Work effectively with and lead co‑workers and/or subordinates if designated. Functional computer skills with stand‑alone PCs, networked PCs and web‑based programs. Must obtain within nine (9) months a Class “B” CDL driver license and a minimum of five (5) ASE certification credentials. Perform related work as required. Education and Experience High‑school graduation (or equivalent) and substantial experience in automotive repair and power‑driven equipment. Five years of full‑time paid employment in servicing, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles or equipment, with at least one year of responsibility for automotive and/or heavy‑duty truck repair involving mechanical and electronic troubleshooting. Vocational training in automotive design and component repair; factory‑certified training courses. Comparable amount of training and experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications. Physical Requirements Heavy work requiring above‑average physical condition; will occasionally exert 100 lb force, frequently 50 lb, and constantly 20 lb to move objects; includes climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, repetitive motions; requires vocal communication, hearing, visual acuity for depth, color, peripheral vision, analysis of written or computer data, inspection of small defects and parts, operation of machinery and motor vehicles; job may expose workers to extreme temperature, noise, hazards, oils, respirator use, and potential blood‑borne pathogens; requires use of office equipment such as PC, calculator, copier, fax, telephone and two‑way radios. Special Requirements Possession of a valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License for air‑brake equipped vehicles or the ability to obtain it within nine (9) months of hire; otherwise, a CDL learner’s permit must be obtained within 60 days of the date of hire. Training will be paid and provided upon hire for those who need to obtain the CDL. Possession or willingness to obtain a minimum of five (5) ASE Heavy‑Truck or Auto/Light‑Truck certifications and secure industrial lift‑truck (fork‑lift) certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
