Job Summary
This full-time position is responsible for the overall direction and coordination of professional medical care within their assigned units. It works to ensure that professional medical services to all patients are coordinated and rendered in an appropriate and timely manner. The position provides in-service training for hospital staff, and actively participates in performance measurement and improvement.
Essential Functions
Policy Development: Actively participates in and directs the multidisciplinary development, maintenance, and periodic review (at least annually) of all departmental policies and procedures pertaining to the provision of patient care and quality improvement in the units in accordance with applicable standards and statutes. Advises and assists Hospital Administration in the development of administrative policies and procedures in accordance with applicable standards and statutes. Oversees the assigned program balanced scorecard in conjunction with the Nurse Manager of the Critical Care and staff. Develops, communicates and ensures maintenance of standards of care for assigned patients in conjunction with the appropriate Medical Staff and Nursing committees. Collaborates with all staff, departments, coordinators, nursing services, and ancillary departments to establish methods and protocols for bed assignments, patient care resource utilization, and nursing care for patients.
Administrative: Review credentials for appropriateness of qualifications and experiences; appoint new physicians to the in-house Intensivist Panel based on criteria developed by the organization; perform annual review/renewal of physicians to the Intensivist Panel; assure adequate in-house coverage through daily coverage schedules; review physician performance issues and recommend termination of contractual relationships for the provision of in-house intensivist services when appropriate; participate in the evaluation of clinical competence of the unit; facilitate the resolution of physician-nurse conflicts; attend relevant hospital and Medical Staff committees such as Medicine and Quality Resources Management (QRM); maintain liaison with other critical care hospitals; represent the hospital’s interest to third-party payor Medical Directors; collaborate with Case Management functions to assure admissions/observations meet required licensed criteria; participate in the selection of new equipment for the Respiratory Care department; prepare written evaluations and recommendations for equipment purchases; negotiate with Administration for budgeting, purchasing decisions, cost-benefit analyses, cost-saving initiatives, and length-of-stay issues; collaborate with hospital administration and board/committee to obtain and maintain approval or accreditation of the program; represent the hospital at regulatory agencies and committees concerning the program. Develop program in collaboration with the organization, board, and/or committee.
Clinical Care: Responsible for the overall clinical supervision and medical direction of the units. Assists with triage of patients, deals with patient care problems by directly communicating with attending and consulting physicians to minimize problems and optimize care, intervenes in inter-physician disagreements, and may intervene when a situation exists where the suspect patient care is life threatening. May recommend immediate removal of a physician from a patient’s care if quality of care or judgment is so poor as to threaten life or limb. Ensures resolution of quality of patient care and adjustment of physician assignments through the Joint Committee or appropriate department chairs.
Quality Enhancement: Participates with the Coordinator, Hospital Administration, and other designated staff in planning for, monitoring, and evaluating the program quality improvement process. Chairs the monthly Mortality and Morbidity educational conference. Reviews avoidable day reports, intervenes with physicians having a disproportionate number of occurrences, cooperates closely with Nursing Managers and other clinical directors to resolve QRM, utilization and quality of patient care issues, reviews and monitors the quality, appropriateness and timeliness of care provided by physicians, ensures consultations to specialists are timely, participates in the Committee and Process Improvement Team, attends all scheduled meetings, ensures compliance of contracted in-house intensivists with relevant standards, and participates in performance measurements and process improvement activities. Ensures proper documentation of all medical care rendered by all contracted intensivist physicians.
Educational: Originates and actively participates in educational programs for Telemetry staff, allied health staff, and physicians. Requires completion of 25 hours of related continuing medical education annually for the Medical Director and requires in-house intensivists to participate in 16 hours of related continuing medical education annually. Actively participates in community outreach programs related to prevention (e.g., heart attacks, elderly falls) as identified through unit data. Coordinates and facilitates, in conjunction with the Coordinator, a monthly review of key cases. Adheres to documentation of time spent on bedside rounds (daily weekdays with Charge Nurses), in-service education programs (2 hours each week for Telemetry, Cath Lab, and Cardiovascular Diagnostics staff), and other hospital staff. Educational programs pertain to all aspects of patient care rendered in units.
Research: Oversees, coordinates, and facilitates research projects in the unit. Encourages research activities within the program to improve the quality of care, as required by accrediting and/or review organizations.
Organizational Relationship: Participates in semiannual evaluations of performance in relation to the job description with the Chief Medical Officer and Administrator. Coordinates goals and performance criteria with the Committee. A part-time Associate Medical Director may assist in overseeing at Shea and Osborn and would report directly to the Medical Director. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
Doctorate M.D. or D.O.
Experience
Three years of related experience and/or direct hospitalist clinical or acute care experience. Experience in medical staff leadership (e.g., committee chairperson or medical staff officer). Holds unsupervised privileges at current or previous institution. Must complete supervision and/or monitoring requirements in specialty, including full ventilator privileges during initial provisional year.
License and Certifications
Physician – State Licensure: License required.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS): Certification required.
