Job Title Director of Systems and Networks (New) Job Family Professionals Full-Time/Part-Time Full time Compensation Grade 10S Pay Type Salary Department Information Technology Service Job Summary The Director of Systems and Network Operations oversees the Systemand Network operations for Furman University. This position hastechnical and managerial oversight for operations within theSystems and Networks groups of Information Technology Services(ITS). These operational groups include; networks, systems, datainfrastructure, and communications. This position establishessystem design and maintenance standards, quality control,configuration management, and test procedures, and ensures theUniversity's network, compute, and communication infrastructuresadhere to industry standards, best practices, and supports theobjectives and strategic plans of the university. Responsibilities Responsible for the overall direction, management and reliabilityof the WAN/LAN/WLAN networks, special circuits, and in/outdoorcable plant. Responsible for the overall direction, management and reliabilityof the university's compute systems to include both virtual andstand-alone server hardware, data storage systems, firmware andsoftware. Responsible for overall direction, management and reliability ofthe telecommunications, cable television, and surveillancesystems. Manages the systems and networks staff including interviewing,selection, training, development, work assignment, evaluation,compensation recommendations, and employee relations for all directreports. Responsible for strategic and tactical financial planning, as wellas technical forecasting, budget forecasting, engineering,operation and maintenance and in all areas of responsibilityincluding networking, systems, and telecom. Communicates and collaborates regularly with ITS Leadership toensure the System and Network infrastructural priorities supportthe goals and needs of ITS, as well as supports the institutionalstrategic plans and initiatives. Performs annual performance reviews for Service and Network staff,as well as provides appropriate professional development, guidanceand mentoring opportunities for staff members. Communicates with industry experts and senior level personnel, bothwithin and external to Furman, to: explore technologies suitabilityfor administrative or academic programs, implement infrastructureupgrades and improvements, design plans for the growth andexpansion, and secure funding and project approval for all areas ofSystems and Network operations. Collaborate with senior Furman staff and stakeholders, vendors andarchitects, and other technical staff to represent ITS and providetechnical input for Furman building renovation and green/brownfield projects. Negotiate, manage, and modify service providercontracts as appropriate. Collaborates with the Director of Information Security andInformation Security team to plan, implement, and support securitypolicies and practices for Furman data, networks and systemsintegrity. These policies and practices include appropriatedisaster recovery and business continuity processes andprotocols. Performs other duties as appropriate and/or as assigned by theCIO. Relationships Daily contact with members of own work unit, immediate supervisor,and members within ITS departments and within the University Occasional contact with university administrators and advisorycommittees. Frequent contact vendors, suppliers, contractors, andconsultants. Responsibility for Final Decisions Responsible for own work. Direct supervision of the Systems and Networks Team Reviews work to ensure compliance with best practices, proceduresand deadlines. Reports To/Supervisor Chief Information Officer Education/Skill Requirements Master's degree or equivalent combination of education andexperience required 5+ years' systems, networks, and data center managementexperience in higher education 5+ years' experience managing technical professional teams Solid knowledge and understanding of network and systemstechniques, design, operations, and best practices Proven experience with enterprise systems, systemsmanagement/administration, VMEs, and network storage devices Proven experience with cloud deployments and migrations Proven experience with network WAN, LAN and WLAN technologiesand protocols Strong verbal and written communication skills Strong interpersonal skills; Ability to work collaborate with awide range of constituents across the university Ability to work alone and in groups Strong troubleshooting skills Work Conditions Work is performed under usual officeconditions.
