Urban Design Planner

Salary Information Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade. A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations. Nature of Work The fundamental reason this classification exists is to support the City’s urban development goals, playing a key role in shaping the future of the city by evaluating priority areas for redevelopment, crafting inspired conceptual design solutions, and guiding projects from early vision through implementation. The position works collaboratively with City departments, developers, business leaders, community groups, and residents to translate urban design objectives into meaningful, visible outcomes. It requires thoughtful application of professional standards, policies, ordinances, and regulations to address complex design challenges and advance high‑quality urban development. Work with confidential project information before it becomes public. Use specialized design and planning software to visualize proposed development. Manage administrative and documentation tasks that keep projects progressing. Ensure alignment with established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Coordinate research, maintain accurate project data, and document key decisions to support clear communication and successful project delivery. Report to the Senior Development Manager. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning, or a closely related field. Two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in urban design, including the creation and rendering of urban design plans and concepts. NOTE: Qualifying education, training, and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
