Animal Control Officer

Animal Control Officer – Liberty County Board of Commissioners, Liberty County Animal Services. Full‑time position: day shift Monday‑Friday 8:00 AM–5:00 PM with rotating on‑call after hours. Major Duties Answer telephone calls and record complaints related to animal welfare. Retrieve animals that are sick, injured, vicious, or non‑restrained and provide care. Investigate complaints of neglect or cruelty in accordance with ordinance and Georgia state law; issue citations as necessary. Report animal mistreatment to Deputy Director or law enforcement. Remove animals from inhumane conditions and transport them to the Liberty County Animal Control Shelter or other receiving areas. Observe and survey areas of alleged violators; conduct witness interviews to determine law violations. Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, washing, and fueling of county vehicles. Perform euthanasia duties, including preparing animal carcasses for disposal. Maintain records and prepare reports. Conduct public speaking at events and local schools to explain animal control duties. Testify against violators in court. Perform on‑call duties after hours. Assist law enforcement with animal‑related cases. Check living conditions of animals in court cases. Network with agencies to rescue animals. Assist Kennel Technicians with cleanliness duties. Perform other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of animal care, rescue procedures, shelter medical practices, breed identification, euthanasia, and carcass disposal. Knowledge of relevant county and state laws and ordinances, evidence collection, and geographic areas. Knowledge of computers and related software. Skills in interpersonal relations, oral and written communication, animal handling, record maintenance, regulation interpretation, investigation, and operation of tranquilizer rifles and catch equipment. Physical Demands / Work Environment Typically standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping; frequently lifting light and heavy objects. Use of tools or equipment requiring high dexterity; utilization of sense of smell. Work performed in offices, noisy environments, outdoors, and occasionally in cold or inclement weather. Exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and contagious or infectious diseases. Use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. More than two (2) years of related experience. Valid Georgia Class C driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
