Facilities Mechanic / Facilities Maintenance Technician

This role focuses on maintaining and repairing facility systems and equipment, with a strong emphasis on HVAC systems and boilers. You will support multiple locations as needed, perform general building maintenance, and ensure the facility operates safely, efficiently, and reliably.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on HVAC systems and boilers to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
• Carry out general plumbing tasks, including installation, maintenance, and repair of facility plumbing systems.
• Execute building repairs, carpentry work, and renovation projects to maintain and improve facility infrastructure.
• Complete painting and general building maintenance tasks to keep the facility in good condition.
• Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively for a wide range of maintenance and repair activities.
• Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and technical documentation to plan and perform maintenance work accurately.
• Conduct preventive maintenance on facility equipment and systems to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
• Assist wherever needed across the facility, taking on projects and tasks that support operations and maintenance goals.
• Perform general electrical maintenance and basic troubleshooting as needed to support facility operations.
• Support snow removal efforts in winter, which may include being on call to ensure safe access to the facility.
• Work primarily at the North Chicago plant while occasionally supporting projects at nearby distribution and Wisconsin locations when required.
• Follow safety procedures and guidelines at all times, especially when working with tools, mechanical systems, and in a chemical facility environment.

Essential Skills

• Facilities maintenance experience, including hands-on work with building systems and equipment.
• Practical experience working with HVAC systems and boilers in an industrial or commercial setting.
• Ability to perform general plumbing tasks, including installation, maintenance, and repair.
• Experience with building repair, carpentry, renovations, and general building maintenance.
• Proficiency using hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical documents to guide maintenance and repair work.
• Troubleshooting skills for mechanical, HVAC, and general facility issues.
• Experience with preventive maintenance practices for facility equipment and systems.
• Basic electrical maintenance and repair skills in a facility environment.
• Willingness and desire to assist wherever needed and take on a variety of projects across the facility.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a chemical company or large industrial facility.
• Familiarity with general maintenance in automotive, mechanical, or industrial settings.
• Knowledge of painting techniques and surface preparation for building maintenance.
• Understanding of safety practices related to snow removal and outdoor facility upkeep.
• Any exposure to EPA-related facility practices and compliance is beneficial.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively with other maintenance and operations staff.
• Adaptability and flexibility to support multiple locations when needed.

Work Environment

The role is based primarily at a North Chicago plant in a large chemical facility that maintains a fairly clean environment. Work may occasionally extend to a nearby distribution center or a Wisconsin location. The core schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with overtime as needed, and there is also a second shift option from Monday through Thursday, 3:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., in a line mechanic capacity. You will work in a spacious industrial setting using a variety of hand tools and power tools, and you will perform maintenance around HVAC systems, boilers, plumbing, electrical components, and general building infrastructure. When you become a permanent employee, steel-toed boots and a uniform are provided, supporting a practical and safety-focused dress code suitable for a mechanical and chemical facility environment.

Job Type & Location: This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Chicago, IL.

Pay and Benefits: The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
