Civil Engineer I

JOB DESCRIPTION

Shoemaker & Haaland is currently seeking to hire a full time Civil Engineer EI to join our team of engineers and technical specialists at our Coralville or Cedar Rapids office. A successful candidate will contribute to the continued growth and success of the company.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college/university. Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and designation as an Engineer Intern (EI). With interest in obtaining Professional Engineer (PE) license. Required Software Skills: Microsoft Office Suite, basic knowledge of Autodesk Civil 3D, and Bluebeam Revu. An understanding of the practical application of civil engineering including applying principles, techniques, and procedures to a project design. Knowledge of civil design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of technical plans, reports, drawings, and models.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Work independently or under the direct supervision of a licensed PE. Receive training and mentorship from experienced civil design engineers.

TASKS & ABILITIES

Apply knowledge of materials, hydraulic analysis, utility design, and roadway geometry to project design tasks. Ability to work as a team member and independently. Ability to research knowledge and techniques that are unfamiliar (Reference manuals, technical resources, etc.) Perform calculations, coordinate between different design elements, document designs, and specifications. Calculate stormwater runoff, slopes, item quantities, etc. Ability to communicate with co-workers, clients, and the public, in a clear concise manner both orally and in written documents. Travel to client work sites and offices for design reviews, site visits, field verifications, and construction observation. Ability to pass screening and background checks for admittance to client sites.
