Doctoral Psychology Intern

The primary function of the Doctoral Psychology Intern is to provide clinical services to the patients under the supervision of the supervising psychologist. Duties may include individual, group, or family therapy, completion of diagnostic interviews and assessments, the provision of consultative services, participation in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, creation and monitoring of measurable treatment goals, development of interventions appropriate for complex case diagnostic needs, collaboration with other staff in the coordination of care, and fidelity monitoring to ensure adherence to treatment protocols. NOTE: The intern is involved in a minimum of two thousand (2,000) hours of supervised training in a planned and sequential program geared to providing training for the intern as a future mental health service psychologist.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Under the direction and evaluation of the Internship Training Committee:
- Oversee patient care provided in the internship track.
- Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team that may include psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, therapists, behavior specialists, patient care associates and education specialists.
- Interact with the multidisciplinary team through the staffing process and through contact on the unit.
- Offer consultative services related to complex diagnostic or case needs. Offer diagnostic evaluations as appropriate.
- Provide direct services, both individual and group with the purpose of contributing to the intern's competence as a future psychologist. Provide family education and therapy when appropriate.
- Complete required medical record documentation and correspondence in an accurate and timely manner.
- Promote department services by giving internal and external presentations about the department in conjunction with the Outreach department, as appropriate.
- Communicate with medical staff to promote positive relations and to provide quality services.
- Assist with milieu management. Model appropriate interventions for staff. Assist staff in developing appropriate behavior management plans as needed.
- Participate in program development and the monitoring of program fidelity.
Support and implement the clinical program in conjunction with the medical director(s) and manager.
- Participate in Hospital committees to promote positive problem-solving and improve services.
- Use knowledge of patient rights to act as patient advocate and to respond to patient grievances.
- Participate in resource evaluation and equipment maintenance.
- Monitor staff members in the use of resources and equipment to maintain a cost-effective, efficient, safe, and productive work environment.
Participate in weekly supervisory meetings conducted by a designated licensed psychologist.
- Participate in weekly treatment team staffing.
- Develop treatment plans for complex cases.
- Assist staff in developing appropriate and effective interventions.
Demonstrate understanding of JCAHO and other regulatory agency compliance regulations.
- Involve self in the learning and application of standards relevant to the programs in which you work.
- Participate in in-services/seminars and other meetings to increase involvement and awareness of regulations.
- Involve self in the education of other disciplines regarding hospital regulations.
- Participate in the Performance Improvement (PI) program.
- Gain understanding of the PI process.
- Apply the PI model to department functions.
- Participate in and/or create PI teams that lead to improvement in own and other Hospital areas.
- Educate and involve employees to the Hospital's and partial hospitalization's PI monitoring and activities.
Participate in Rogers committees, meetings, and team projects.
- Demonstrate punctuality and preparedness.
- Demonstrate effective chairperson skills, if applicable.
- Good organizational skills with agenda and minute preparation.
- Ability to facilitate a meeting to keep it on track.
- Contribute in a positive, solution-focused manner.
Duties as Doctoral Intern.
- Guide patient care and coordinate services with physicians and other healthcare providers as necessary meet patients' treatment needs.
- Provide individual therapy for complex cases as requested.
- Provide group therapy as requested with the goal of building competence as a future psychologist.
- Participate in individual clinical supervision with the supervising psychologist on a weekly basis.
- Complete case consultations or diagnostic evaluations as assigned.
- Assess patients as necessary for transfer to different level of care. Assist in discharge planning as appropriate.
- Provide crisis intervention as needed, when appropriate. Model solution focused and trauma informed interactions in crisis situations.
- Comply with the hospital's policies and procedures, including human resources, infection control, and employee health policies and programs.
- Project a professional image by wearing appropriate, professional attire.
Additional Job Description:
Education/Training Requirements:
- Master's degree in psychology or related field required. Must have completed supervised clinical experience. Must be currently enrolled in a doctoral program in psychology and must have completed all relevant didactic and practicum work.
- American Heart Association Healthcare provider CPR certification or American Red Cross Professional Rescue is required within thirty (30) days of date of hire. Annual re-certification is required.
- Formal training in management of the aggressive patient NCI is required within sixty
(60) days of date of hire. Annual re-certification is required.
Special Requirements:
- Must attend a minimum of two (2) hours per week of scheduled, face-to-face individual supervision.
- Must attend a minimum of four (4) hours per week of learning activities (case conferences involving cases in which the intern has participated, seminars dealing with clinical issues, co-therapy with staff person including discussion, group supervision and individual supervision).
- Must be capable of interacting effectively with a variety of people as part of the multidisciplinary team.
- Must attend required educational program and supervisory sessions as directed.
- Must maintain liability insurance of $1 Million / $3 Million coverage through an independent insurer or graduate school program.
