HVAC Building Service Engineer - 3 Positions Available Job No: 558066 | Work Type: Staff | Location: Southern California: Long Beach | Categories: Bargaining Unit: Unit 6 - Teamsters Local 2010, Appointment Type: Temporary, Time Basis: Full Time, Job Search Category/Discipline: Trades Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities Management and the immediate supervision of the Supervising Building Service Engineer, maintains, services, repairs, and inspects heating, ventilating, mechanical, and air conditioning systems, and the mechanical, plumbing, electrical and electronic systems associated with the decentralized utilities centers located throughout the campus and the Central Plant facility. Key Responsibilities Responsible for operating, maintaining, repairing and inspecting heating, air conditioning, water treatment and ventilating equipment (i.e. boilers, chillers, condensers, compressors, circulating water pumps, blower van, valves, ducting, gauge). Tests, adjusts and calibrates heating and air conditioning machinery and mechanical, electronic and/or pneumatic control instruments and systems. Maintains and inspects, diagnoses and makes emergency repairs to steam, natural gas, water, air and oil distribution systems. Will be called upon to periodically adjust air handling equipment to achieve air flow, temperature and humidity balances for individual rooms, building area or buildings. Repairs and replaces bearing, shafts, seals, rings, electrical wiring and installs mechanical system parts, gauges, valves, and pipes which require the application of skills and knowledge equivalent to the journey level in one or more of the basic trades worked. Department FM Engineering Services – Beach Building Services (BBS) at California State University Long Beach is dedicated to supporting the university by ensuring the safe operation, maintenance, and development of the campus. BBS provides facilities based comprehensive support to the campus in the areas of academics, activities, and event services. Environmental Health and Safety Energy and Utilities Facilities Operations (Service Response, Fiscal Operations, Payroll/Personnel, IT Services) Planning and Sustainability Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (Engineering, Fire Alarm, Electrical and Plumbing Shops) Building Trades (Lock, Sign, Carpentry, Paint, and Auto Shops) Grounds and Landscaping Services Custodial Services Design and Construction Services Time Base 1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week. This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date. Classification Building Service Engineer Compensation CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,998 (Step 1) – $8,737 (Step 20) per month. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The ideal candidate possesses a strong working knowledge of HVAC systems for both central and decentralized building plants, including building temperature control systems with electric, electronic, and pneumatic controls, along with up‑to‑date facilities maintenance practices covering plumbing systems, electric motor control operations, and water treatment systems. The candidate demonstrates excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills to effectively interface with the university community, interact positively with co‑workers and supervisors, and communicate in a consistently civil manner, while maintaining a professional image and demeanor. A background in trade‑related higher education is desirable, including CFC certification, as well as experience working in a university or institutional setting. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a “vision of excellence.” Education and Experience Equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of journey-level experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of boiler, heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment and systems required. Four years of experience is preferred. Licenses / Certificates BOC Level I & II Certification is preferred. A valid California driver's license is required. Physical Summary Heavy work – Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.
