Acute Care Surgeon

The Division of Acute Care Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center is accepting applications for a full-time academic acute care surgeon (trauma, emergency general surgery, surgical critical care) at the Assistant Professor academic rank. Qualified candidates will be completing a 2-year Acute Care Surgery fellowship and be Board Certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.

The Division of Acute Care Surgery includes 19 faculty members that provide a broad array of clinical services while caring for injured, critically ill, burn, and emergency general surgery patients. The faculty are committed to resident education, as well as clinical and professional development of 8 fellows via one of the longest-standing fellowship training programs in the country with over 100 graduates since its inception. We also carry a T32 post-doctoral research fellowship training program. The Division has broad connectivity across many surgical societies, as well as involvement in many investigator-initiated and funded (e.g., NIH, DoD, industry) research studies. Outreach, education, and prevention are also consistent focuses of each of our clinical service lines.

Vanderbilt serves as an American College of Surgeons designated Level 1 Trauma Center in the state of Tennessee and is a primary referral center for our community providers with a catchment area of 80,000 square miles covering Tennessee and surrounding states. Vanderbilt houses over 1000 beds with over 6000 trauma team activations and 5400 trauma admissions annually and continues to grow, with case mix of blunt to penetrating trauma approximately 85% to 15% and a large referral base through a robust pre-hospital ground and flight system.

The Vanderbilt Surgical ICU has >1500 admissions a year and includes patients with general surgical, transplantation, orthopedic, ENT, and gynecologic diseases. The Emergency General Surgery service provides both breadth of experience as well as exposure to rare and complex surgical pathology and has roughly 2000 consultations per year with about 1000 admissions and at least 900 major operative cases. We also carry a robust burn service, which admits 650 burn patients per year, with approximately 1,000 operative cases.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have completed a 2-year Acute Care Surgery fellowship and be Board Certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care.

The ideal candidate should have outstanding clinical experience, possess strong communication and collaboration skills. Applicants should have a strong record across research, education, and ongoing quality/performance improvement. This position will require travel to our associated institutions to develop and cover trauma care as we are committed to developing care across middle Tennessee. Academic rank, tenure and additional leadership opportunities are commensurate with experience and qualifications.
