GOLF COURSE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT

Salary Assistant Golf Course Superintendent – 27 Hole Golf Course. Salary range $56,036 – $70,045 per year, with potential to progress up to $84,054 per year as of December 2025. Position Summary Under direction of the Golf Course Superintendent, manage upkeep of City of St. George municipal golf course, including assignment of work duties for maintaining course and equipment. Highly skilled position with supervisory responsibilities. Essential Functions Assign and supervise daily work of full- and part-time golf course employees. Evaluate employees for merit increases. Determine need for seed, sod, water, cutting, and raking of grass on fairways, greens, and tees; evaluate disease and pest problems and controls; calibrate spreaders and sprayers. Apply or assign subordinates to assist in application of pesticides, fertilizer, fungicides, and insecticides to treat the course as necessary. Maintain existing watering systems in proper operating condition, including controllers; may be involved in redesign and modification of current watering systems, sprinklers, and/or controllers; locate and repair power failures related to sprinkling systems; divert water in to and out of irrigation pond at any hour; maintain irrigation pond water level. Construct and/or renovate tees, greens, mounds, drains, cart paths, etc. Ensure proper care and cultivation of turf, shrubs, trees, and flowers, including pruning, trimming, and spraying. Maintain records of equipment and supplies used; maintain records and schedule applications of fertilizers, sprays, and chemicals, recording their use for each season; assist in preparing reports reflecting total hours of personnel and equipment used. Check fluid levels and perform service and minor repairs on equipment and vehicles as needed; ensure all workers are trained in proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Assist in budget preparation process by making recommendations to Golf Course Superintendent. Perform all duties required of Golf Course Maintenance Worker. Set up golf course for tournaments, including picking cup and tee marker placement and marking hazards, out of bounds, and drop areas as pertaining to the rules of golf. Perform other related duties as required. Working Conditions Moderately heavy physical activity; required to push, pull, or lift medium weights. Inconsistent working conditions: may stand, walk, or sit uncomfortably for extended periods. Moderate exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, or grease. Irregular hours, including some weekends, holidays, special projects, etc. Intermittent exposure to stress as result of human behavior. Qualifications Education: High school diploma or equivalent. College or vocational training closely related to golf course maintenance, turf research, plant science, agronomy horticulture, or botany helpful but not required. Experience: Minimum of three (3) years full-time paid work experience in maintenance of golf course, with at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity. Must have a basic understanding of golf course design principles. Licenses and Certifications Must possess a valid driver license; a valid Utah Driver License (CDL rating desired) must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained throughout employment. Possess, or obtain within first year of employment, a valid Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator License. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The rules and etiquette of golf. Toro Site Pro desired (basic knowledge). Additional Abilities Maintain simple records. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, department heads, employees, the public, and officials and employees of other jurisdictions. Communicate in Spanish is a plus.
