Montgomery College Rockville, Takoma Park/Silver Spring & Germantown English & Reading Departments is currently acceptingapplications for possible openings as a part-time faculty memberteaching English and Reading. We are seeking an enthusiastic anddedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, astrong commitment to our students, and demonstrates the ability tomotivate and educate in an engaging manner. The hiring decision for part-time faculty involves an academicjudgment and shall be determined at Management’s solediscretion. During the academic year part-time faculty at MontgomeryCollege may teach no more than 11.5 ESH (equivalent semester hour)per semester and no more than 23 ESH per academic year. During summer part-time faculty at Montgomery College may teachno more than 10 ESH (equivalent semester hour) for both sessionscombined. Duties and Responsibilities Teach English composition classes and support studentsuccess. Teach a varied schedule of courses on campus or that mayinclude day, night, weekend, and/or accelerated sections. Somesections of college English may also be taught at local highschools. Teach a variety of modalities, primarily in person but possiblyalso online. Provide students detailed written and verbal feedback on theirwriting. Grade and provide feedback to students in a timely manner tomonitor student mastery and progress through a course. Participate in general education assessment for selectedEnglish courses. Complete required professional development training, which mayinclude training in Blackboard and structured remote coursedelivery. Follow guidelines from department chair and coordinators toensure consistent content coverage and student experience acrossmultiple sections of a course and to ensure that course objectivesare met. Communicate in a timely manner with students and with thecourse coordinators and department chair. Meet established deadlines to submit student mid-term and finalcourse grades. Other duties as assigned by the department chair. As an option, part-time faculty may also serve as embeddedacademic coaches supporting the Achieving the Promise Academy,Montgomery College’s academic coaching program, which partners withthe English Department to help students succeed in rigorouscollege-level composition courses. Academic coaches empowerstudents to reframe challenges, build on their strengths, andtarget areas for growth by embedding within course sections andpartnering with the section’s instructional faculty to supportstudents. Academic coaches may serve within both remote andin-person modalities to hold group and/or individual coachingsessions outside of class and provide ongoing communication thatnudges students to stay on track and access the resources they needto succeed. In addition to helping students strengthen theirunderstanding of critical concepts and complete their coursework,embedded academic coaches use a variety of teaching, tutoring, andcoaching strategies to help students develop the academic skills,knowledge, attitudes, and habits that contribute to success intheir composition class and in college more broadly. Required Qualifications Master’s degree in English, Reading, Rhetoric, or a closelyrelated field. Proficiency with and ability to use the Blackboard LearningManagement System (LMS) and other web-based instructionaltechnology to facilitate learning in a web-enhancedenvironment. Demonstrated experience teaching using a variety of deliverymethods, online resources, and technology applications across thecurriculum. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment topromoting belonging, inclusion, and multicultural competence in aneducational and work environment and must be willing to contributeto the College’s strategic plan of inclusion. Faculty members are expected to have access to a personalcomputer with virus protection that can connect to the internetoutside of the work location (i.e., office, classroom, collegecampus). Montgomery College (MC) provides an MC e-mail account andaccess to the Blackboard learning platform, password-protectedfaculty sections of the website, college listservs, and otherfaculty communications tools. *If you do not have access to apersonal computer, please notify the department chair at the timeof interview. Preferred Qualifications One or more years of community college English compositionteaching experience. Online or remote teaching experience, using Blackboard, Zoom,Collaborate Ultra, and/or other educational technology. For degrees earned outside of the U.S., a copy of your educationequivalency, conducted by a nationally recognized evaluationservice, must be included in your application.
