Respiratory Therapist

A Respiratory Therapist (RT) is a healthcare professional trained in diagnosing, treating, and caring for patients with respiratory issues. They work in a variety of medical settings, including hospitals, clinics, home care, and rehabilitation centers. Respiratory Therapists are skilled in using equipment such as ventilators, oxygen therapy, and other devices to assist patients who experience breathing difficulties.

Common Duties and Responsibilities

• Evaluate patients with breathing difficulties or cardiopulmonary issues by reviewing their medical history, conducting physical exams, and interpreting diagnostic tests, including blood gases, chest X-rays, and pulmonary function tests.
• Administer treatments to enhance breathing, such as oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, chest physiotherapy, and inhalation therapies like nebulizer treatments.
• Set up and monitor equipment such as ventilators, oxygen tanks, and CPAP machines. Ensure proper function and maintenance of respiratory devices.
• Respond to emergency situations, including respiratory failure and asthma attacks, providing immediate life-saving interventions.
• Educate patients and families on managing chronic respiratory conditions such as COPD, asthma, and sleep apnea. Teach proper techniques for using respiratory devices and medications.
• Work with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement comprehensive care plans for patients with respiratory conditions.
• Maintain accurate records of patient assessments, treatments, and progress. Document any changes in the patient's respiratory condition or treatment plan.
• Assist patients in pulmonary rehabilitation programs aimed at improving respiratory function, increasing exercise tolerance, and reducing symptoms.

Licensing Requirements by State

All states require respiratory therapists to be licensed or certified to practice, which involves passing the NBRC exams and meeting state-specific licensure requirements. Specific regulations vary by state:

• California: Requires certification by the California State Respiratory Care Board.
• Texas: Requires a license from the Texas Medical Board after certification by the NBRC.

• Florida: Requires licensure through the Florida Department of Health, including continuing education.
• Nevada: Requires licensing through the Nevada State Board of Respiratory Care.
