Description RSCH AND DEV ENGR 3 TX – Placement within the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department of UC San Diego. The position supports both the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, working with faculty, researchers, and students in a wide variety of academic and administrative contexts. The community includes approximately 65 ladder‑rank faculty, 12–15 instructional faculty, 150 academic researchers and postdoctoral scholars, 70 career staff, 60 temporary or student staff, and over 300 Master’s and Ph.D. students. Undergraduate majors exceed 1,000 and total course enrollments are more than 24,500 annually. The Department manages ten research facilities, including Biomolecular NMR, Mass Spectrometry, Cryo‑EM, Biophysics Instrumentation, Inorganic Characterization, Protein Crystallography, Small Molecule X‑Ray Crystallography, the Fabrication Facility, and the Chemistry Storehouse. It hosts national research center grants and major training grants that support graduate and postdoctoral research across UC San Diego and external institutions. Using professional engineering concepts, the engineer performs a full range of assignments in biomolecular NMR. Responsibilities include day‑to‑day operation and routine maintenance of advanced NMR equipment such as Varian and Bruker spectrometers, technical implementation of equipment enhancements, system optimization, and ensuring data acquisition meets research needs. Manage routine and advanced NMR instrumentation, ensuring optimal performance for 2D, 3D, and 4D biomolecular experiments. Lead hardware and software upgrades, troubleshoot issues, and maintain instrument uptime for high‑impact research projects. Collaborate with faculty and researchers on experimental design, sample preparation, and data acquisition & analysis for proteins and other macromolecules. Provide technical expertise in biomolecular NMR methodologies and support daily facility operations, including training users and developing best‑practice protocols. Maintain safety standards for hazardous materials and cryogenic systems, coordinating with institutional safety personnel. Oversee and train a user base of 100+ faculty, postdoctoral scholars, students, and staff, ensuring compliance with safety and operating procedures. Qualifications Hands‑on experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting NMR instrumentation in a research laboratory, including biomolecular solution NMR with proteins and other macromolecules. Proficiency with NMR data acquisition and analysis platforms (e.g., Bruker TopSpin, Varian/Agilent VNMRJ, MestreNova) and experience with experimental design and spectral interpretation. Strong engineering knowledge and application of design and troubleshooting principles to support instrumentation and experimental systems. Experience in collaborative research environments, providing support for multidisciplinary projects and addressing user challenges. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver user training, onboarding users, and guiding experimental design and data interpretation. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information to audiences with varying expertise. Expertise in diagnosing and resolving complex hardware and software issues, including RF, electronics, mechanical systems, and Linux/Windows computing environments. Adept at prioritizing and managing multiple assignments, scheduling, and maintaining high instrument uptime. Prefer familiarity with cryogenic systems and safe handling of liquid helium and nitrogen.
