Description: The Registered Nurse implements professional nursing practice centered on the patient as a whole person. This role creates a caring environment focused on healing and wellness. The RN identifies patient risk factors and presenting complaints, obtaining health information as necessary. Objective and subjective data collection is performed, and initial admission assessments are verified. The RN develops a problem list, prioritizing patient needs based on input from the team. Actions and interventions are designed relevant to the patient's culture and age. Desired outcomes are determined in coordination with the patient and family. Patient care therapies and procedures are implemented according to established policies and professional guidelines. The RN explains procedures and treatments to patients and families while addressing patient stress. Changes in patient condition are recognized and communicated appropriately. Ongoing comprehensive patient assessments are conducted and documented according to hospital policy. The plan of care and clinical pathway are revised based on patient and family responses. Mentorship of other staff members and nursing students is encouraged. Facilitation of the orientation of new staff members is part of the role. Active personal participation in quality improvement activities is expected. The RN demonstrates critical thinking and creativity in patient care.
